Line level inputs vs. XLR inputs in summing

This is in another thread and I will admit this is something I should know but DON'T. So, please just deal with the fact that this is a noob question coming from an experienced engineer. HAHA.

I have gotten my hands on a little console I am using for summing some mixes. There are no line inputs on the channels just XLR inputs. I am running my mixes out of my LUCID 8824 into this at +4. Is this possible? So far I am just getting distortion, which Ido understand I am amplifying a signal that doesn't need to be amplified. Help. Please. IS it possible?

What mixer? Line ins can be on XLR.

It's an old yamaha m512 console. 12 channels. Nothing great but I have used the two outs for pres and they sound really dark. I use them on drums all the time. let me see if I can find a picture for you.

I had a friend use this console for me a while back and I liked the sound. I posted some comments before on GS about it. I have never been able to find out much about it. This is the first time I have used it by myself and I'm doing something wrong. Then again it was in my friends studio for years that is very nice. He is out for a while so I can't really call him up about it till like 6 months. Help

Did you ever get your yamaha m512 to work for summing?

You can set the input gains to line level, -10 or +4
