Difference between the purple audio M77 and the Universal Audio 6176

Does anyone know the major difference between the two limiters? Does the U/A give more bang for the buck? (Having a mic pre built in)

Well, it has a mic pre built in. If you need or want a mic pre, I'd sau that it probably does give more 'bang for the buck'. If you don't need the pre, then it doesn't.

The UA 1176 and Purple are both nice units, the Purple tends to sound a little more 'high fi' and slightly more extended in the top, where as I hear more distortion (intentionally kept to make it more "vintage"...whatever that is) in the UA design.

In the spectrum of 'clean' vs 'not so clean', if pieces like the GML and Millennia are in the 'clean' camp (use a clock face as a point of reference...so those two are @ 9 o'clock), then the 610 is exactly polar opposite of that (@ 3 o'clock). This is also closer to where the 1176 resides, especially when hitting the input hard. Pieces like the NV, DRS-2, Pendulum, are more centered between those two sonic opposites (varying from 11:50-12:20)...this is personally where I like to be for most applications, and this is closer to where the Purple is. So it completely depends on what you are looking for. Good Luck.

Thanks guys, sorry for the delay in the post. I have a chance to pick up the Universal channel strip for $1700, My thinking was (for a few more dollars) I could get a mic pre. Don't really need the mic pre as i'm using 2x Focusrite red 6, and Summit TPA200B. I need 1176..lol
