People have been chasing this grail for a number of years. It seems like every year or two there's a breathless rush of ink on some start-up that's about to go public with their "hit-predicter" software...
... and they're all household names, now.

(At least this article points out that trend and that this software is hardly the first.)

Not that I don't think people -- including the 14 year old girls specifically cited in the article -- are somewhat predictable. It's just that, so far, the revolution in hit prediction doesn't seem to have taken off.

Yet.

This reminds me of the old quotes concering Clive Davis: "He has the ears of a 14 year old girl."

Hence his ability to discern songs that would be hits....

That's nothing, my friend just designed software that brainwashes you into signing a locked in consecutive 15 full-length CD deal on a miserable advance, writes you off and shelves you after a few pathetic attempts at barely marketing you product to all the wrong channels, radio and audiences, then, subsequent to your failure and any and all contractual obligation terms on their end, proceeds to merchandise the f*ck out of you and collect your related publishing royalties until long after you've hung yourself in a motel 6.

The 9000 series is the most reliable computer ever made. No 9000 computer has ever made a mistake or distorted information. We are all, by any practical definition of the words, foolproof and incapable of error.

Okay now... predicting what rock critics are gonna say... that's too easy... hell, you don't even have to listen to the friggin' music to do that.
