Tape Machine Help

'sup.

i own a Fostex Creative Sound Systems A-Series 1/4" machine that is need of some calibrating/maintenance.
i actually have used it but either i'm not threading the tape correctly, which i doubt 'cause i'm doing exactly what the manual says or the heads are messed up.
it just tightens and stops rolling.

i want to get it properly fixed because the times it did work correctly were awesome.

i loved being able to bounce a song to tape and then "blend" back into the final mix... yum...

so the question is:

does anybody know any repair shops here in NYC?
i'd like to get it fixed locally 'cause it would be a lot more convenient but i'm open to other suggestions as to where to take it for repairs.

thank you in advance!

Look at the heads and guides. When a tape has Sticky Shed it will lock up the machine because there’s so much crap in the tape path. If there's black or brown gunk all over the place, clean the crap out of it with lots of alcohol and swabs and use a different tape.

You should be able to 'fake the tape sensor out" and make it run without tape. See if it runs that way. How are the ffw and rwd? It could be a lot of things, but look for the simple things first.

I had a deck that started to do this and it was the break tensioners. Easy fix to.

You may be able to test the tensioners by manually holding the tension rollers into place when you hit play... just a thought

thanks for the responses!

well, i think it's the tensioners.
they just either lock up or, the one on the left, totally slackens and then the tape stops.

it seems to me like they are just not in synch, i mean the slack is just not even, if that makes any sense.

bummer.
