Thread Starter | Analog + Digital Monitoring Solution?
Ok my first post. Basically, I am building my studio and the first thing I bought was an RME HDSP 9652. I am going to be buying a Mackie 800r for 8 inputs, and I need a D/A for monitoring. I would buy a DAC1 right off the bat, except that I still need a way to hear the analog audio coming from my other sound card. (Yes, I use my computer for other things than just recording, and the HDSP 9652 only outputs from Cubase, not windows.) I have Event Tr8's and the manual says not to hook up a balanced (XLR from DAC1) and unbalanced (TRS from sound card) simultaneously. This is where the Central Station comes in-- it's the obvious choice, and can handle monitoring of digital + analog simultaneosly. Plus I get expandability, head phone submixing etc. But my only concerns are: -The D/A is not incredible, not really meant for monitoring. (from what I've read by searching here) -The analog coming from my sound card is unbalanced TRS, and I fear what that might do when plugged into the CS. The unbalanced RCA jacks are apparently shit. -There seems to be an awful lot of people who have had problems with the CS. So I got to thinking, what about the Dig 002 Rack? It seems to have what I want, isn't its D/A conversion from Apogee? Plus I would get 4 more inputs out of the deal. Is it even possible to use the Dig002 as a D/A converter from the 9652's SPDIF out (or ADAT) + analog monitoring from my other sound card, +4 inputs using ADAT out to 9652? I know this isn't what the rack was intended for, but thought it may be possible. And how would this compare to the CS D/A? I know it's more expensive. If that won't work, any other recommendations to my analog + digital monitoring dilemma are welcome. Thanks. |
