Thread Starter | Hi Guys Ok, I'm recording a punk band in a couple of weeks and am gonna try the 'Recorderman' overhead tecnique. Couple of things I'm still curious about: Presumably, If I'm Standing in front of the kit, the mic over the drummers right shoulder is my left OH and the mic above the snare is the right OH? (sorry if that seems obvious, wanna get it right!) How about panning. Using this technique, can I still pan the OH's extreme left and right if I feel like it without cocking up phase and stuff? Cheers Mike |

| YEah you got the OH's correct, Regarding panning, spread it right out since the mics are so close to each other to begin with it's hard to overkill. No prob regarding phase issues really since you've alligned the kick and snare to both mics as per definition of the technique. Just a heads up...the shoulder mic will end up lower and further behind the snare mic...IE don't worry your doing fine. Also, since your doing punk make sure you mic the kick and snare - you'll use the kick mic for sure, the snare OTOH...just in case of emergency, or to fade in a sample if you need to. |

Thread Starter | Thanks for the help kats thats good news. I'm also planning on stereo room mics (omni) 10 -12 ft in front of the kit. what distance would you suggest I keep between the mics to compliment the 'recorderman' OH's? Also...I usually put a mono 'smash' mic a couple of ft in front of the kit, would this be compatable with said technique? Thanks Mike |

| FOK hell yeah! What I ususally do is put a FOK about 8' in front of the kit and crush it. I position it to get less cymbals and more drums or else the cymbals will get nasty when blending in with the o/h's. I get enough ambience between the o/hs and fok that I hardly use the room mics - especially when you use LDCs for the overheads. I like also using a pair of SDC's as o/hs and get a pretty cool tight punchy sound, albiet drier than LDC's. But blended with the fok it sounds pretty good. It's ususally enough for me - I pan the oh's hard l/r and the fok dead center and violla! Anyhow, put up as many mics as you like - you don't have to mix them in, but it's good insurance. |

| I do the same thing as Kats, one FOK or room up the center squashed along with the quasi Glynn J. technique. |

| For you omni room mics, make an equilateral triangle with the front of the BD.

Thread Starter | Ok, I'm with ya, thanks kats. I'll put up stereo room mics as back up in case I need to supplement the ambience. Thanks for the tip drumsound, thats something I've been overlooking with my room mics. By the way, any preference on FOK mic? Awsome guys Mike |
