Clients and Copyright

I produced a radio spot yesterday and the client wanted me to mix it with a song from a Sony Music Christmas compalation CD featuring a Vanessa Williams vocal. I explained that under no circumstance would I mix their voice over with that music, because they don't own the music and I am unable to license it (with in a reasonable budget). The client apparently does this all of the time, and the radio stations that air the spots do the mixing with the popular music. So, here is whaty I believe to be true about this ciccumstance:

1. the stations are autherized to play that music based on a BMG or ASCAP licence (like a nickle per play) - this however does not give them the authority to SYNCRONIZE the music with voice over to promote a product

Please correct me or fill in the blanks if you have additional information about this.

2. The client left angry, because the solution that I came up with was to give her 1 CD with the edited voice over, and another CD with the music edited to :60 seconds. The lable on the music CD is:
Reference Music :60
The music contained on this CD is the Property of
Sony Music / BMG Music - Copyright 2004
Any unauthorized use, distribution, duplication
or synchronization is a violation of U.S. and
International copyright laws.

Did I go far enough to protect myself?
Why don't people understand that what they do is stealing?
Why, even after they are told, what the situation is - do they still not care that they are violating laws?

I work in radio and I get asked to do the same thing all the time, I refuse to do it and I explain the situation, and offer an alternative, some library music licenced for for exactly this purpose and i usually have no complaints.

People don't feel like they are stealing because it's not something physical. they can't touch the song.

If it's good enough for them to argue about using that exact song for a radio spot, then it should also be good enough for the Artist who wrote it to be financially compensated.
