High pass filter recomendations

I am starting to using lots of High pass filters to keep out those unwanted lower frequencies but, I really want to make sure I'm not cutting anything out that needs to be there. Can you guys give me some recommendations you use for stuff like:

Vocals (male and female)
Acoustic guitar
Snare drum
Any drums
And anything else!

Yes, yes......I know I'm going to here "just use your ears" type responses from guys (and I am), but I just want some basic starting places and recommendations you guys have found. Thanks

First off... Are you looking for hardware or plugins?

If your after a general rule: a lot of consoles have a 80hz HPF button. I use it on most tracks with the exception of
Kick (digital HPF at 30HZ - 40HZ,
Big Toms (around 60HZ),
Bass (40HZ - 60HZ, depends what you want),
Some elec guitars (use your ears),
Low end loops etc.

Some vocals I might filter up to 100HZ and if you want to cr8 some cool filter FX you can slide it right up to you mids.

There are no fixed filter freqs but if you are using your ears, and your brain when it gets to low, you can get a grasp on the sweet spots.

I'm using the Digi Rack 7 band eq to cut unwanted frequencies. From there I'm using my pultec and other hardware to sweeten. Is there a difference in hardware LP filters vs plug-ins?

The urei 539 has a fairly nice LP/HP filter section. I got mine for $5!

Not very difficult to short out the graphic section either. It does add a little roughness to the freq response even when all the bands are at 0. +/-1dB or so here and there.

When the low mids are unruly I'll use a steep hpf in combination with a low shelf. That gives me a somewhat adjustable slope. I prefer to use a hard hpf for low bass. The Sonnox eq has a 36db hpf, and I've heard the UAD Cambridge has an absolute cut. Anyone know of a native eq with an equivalent filter mode?
