DBX 162 VU compared to Distressor?

I am debating on purchasing a DBX 162 VU or an Empirical Labs Distressor. I would like to know the Gearslutz's opinion of these to compressors? Which one should I purchase? It will be used for Hip-hop and Rock styled recordings, like Dr.Dre meets System of a Down, music

The Distressor will be much more flexible than a 160 or 162, neither of which has variable attack or release, just threshold, ratio and makeup gain controls. I love the 160 on kick and bass but the Distressor is also strong in these applications plus many others. FYI, the 162 is a stereo version of the 160 and doesn't do dual mono.

You should check ou the DBX 165a. Quite a compressor for around $600.

Agreed; it's similar to a 160 but with all the controls you'll ever need. Some folks say the 165 (without the peakstop limiter of the 165A) sounds a little better than the 165A, which I own and like a lot for kick, snare, vocals, etc.

But IMHO a 165 or 165A is still not as flexible as a Distressor for the kind of music you'll be doing.
