Bouncing Midi to Audio in Logic 9.1.1

To save processor performance, I have started to bounce some audio tracks to audio. I've simply been bouncing regions to the audio bin and then placing them back into the project in their own newly created track. Is there a preferred method to doing this? Or is my current method ideal?

Second, if I keep the midi track from which I just bounced and just have it muted, is it still eating up processor power? Or is there a better way to keep the track for quick recalls/rebounces if needed?

i would like to know to. recently i have had to bounce midi to audio in logic with my 42 track count and growing song. i'm using a quad with 7gb growing. i was using amp sims but my g/f just gave ma a marshall combo amp that's helping a lot. i'm pretty much bouncing all the midi synth stuff over to audio but not the guitars on amp sims because i might want to change stuff.

i delted my midi once i was 100% sure but was wondering how i could save them outside the session for safety. i'm using a digi002 and thinking maybe going xfirewire on my rosetta might help a little with my track count stability. sometimes i like to record a lot of tracks and work through them later. i took so much fat off the session and it is better but still need to fix this issue for a smoother work flow here :P

any suggestions you guys got would be great! oh and i still use 9.0.2 because 9.1 is not as stable in 32 or 64 bit for me as the later.

you can use the 'bounce in place' feature
hold control and click on the region you'd like to bounce.
then go into the 'bounce and merge' menu.

for your second question:
try the 'freeze' function
go underneath 'global tracks' to the title of your first audio track or instrument track.
again hold the control key and click on 'freeze'
afterwards you should see another icon next to your mute and solo buttons that looks like a snowflake.
when you click this logic will bounce a temporary file onto the same track.
if you want to make edits you can 'unfreeze' by clicking the (now green) snowflake again before re-freezing.

have fun thumbsup

Doesn't the freeze function put more pressure on the disk? Is it less work for your computer if you create audio files out of your MIDI instead of just freezing them? Or is it essentially the same thing?

i think the idea of the freeze function is in fact to make a temporary audio file
and it also deactivates the plugins and software instruments on the track which by extension should free up the processor.
try it and see if your cpu activity display drops a little.

I think the interest for me overall is creating audio files that I can manipulate on a new track, and if need be go back to the source midi file and rebounce if I need to.

Is there a preferred method for doing this?

i guess the 'bounce in place' will be the best.
but you'll have to bypass all the plugins and instruments manually afterwards to notice any difference in cpu usage.
make sure to 'leave' the original so that you can go back to the midi.

if you have many tracks to bounce there's also an option under:
file >export >track as audio file or all tracks as audio files.
in the subsequent menu check the box 'add resulting files to audio bin'
and also decide if you want the plug in effects or not.
