Recording schools really only give you the impression of teaching what you need to know to make a living in the audio world.
I taught at Media Tech/Dallas Sound Lab for a very short time about ten years ago.
I just couldn't look at the faces of the expectant students and not tell them the truth about the prospects of them earning a living.
The radio/TV facility I had previously worked for had an opening in their VERY BUSY dub room and I sent one of my students over there.
He got the job.

I'll be honest with you...

If you do want to be in audio you need to learn EVERYTHING to survive.
You have to be a jack-of-ALL-trades.

This week I am mixing broadcast audio for a religious event.
Each weekend I do production at dance seminars/competitions in different US city.
I do as many A1 or AV calls as I can fit into my schedule for corporate events.
Next month I will be running monitors at a big high school show choir event (think Glee.)
I even moonlight and mix old-school C&W bands at a dance hall when I have an open Saturday night.
If the money is there I'll even mix a band or take out a sound system.

I have done two CDs for people at my studio this year and I have EVERYTHING required for a studio (2", 1", 1/2", 1/4" Pro Tools, all of the toys and outboard, everything...
Can I make the same money with the studio?
No
