What are you using for alternate Monitors? I'm looking at these:

I've got NS10's, dyn bm6a's ( selling and probably going w/ ADAM s3a's) and a few other odd balls ( auratones, no name bookshelf speaks)

I'm looking for something as a real world ref for the desktop type speakers that are out there.... I want them as a ref, but would also like to enjoy listening to them if possible.

I'm partial to these: http://store.apple.com/1-800-MY-APPL...lm=TE820LL%2FA

and the harmon kardon "sticks" both have a sub.

Stealth has suggested these: http://www.volusion.com/demo/audio/P...tCode=SRS%2DZ1

what else are ya'll digging.
I'd probably be using them at home with the laptop set up for edits, and general listening ( home office ) but would like em to work for me as ref's to take into the studio.

is there such a thing as "accurate" when referring to this type of monitor?

If you're meaning computer speakers, I would be looking more towards what is most common rather than most accurate. You already got plenty of accuracy. Commonness might give a better idea of what most people are listening to. I use some really cheap noname ones that came with an Emachine computer I had. Really helps when I am making things meant to be heard on web sites. The most common are probably the Creative (Cambridge? whatever, the SoundBlaster guys), like these perhaps?:

or maybe whichever are the stock Dell ones, lol.

yes, get some really cheap plastic desktop speakers that come with soundblasters etc. especially those with bass boost/loudness and that things, because 9 out of 10 people will have this things cranked up.

I don't know how common they are, but I've had a set of the tiny Cambridge Soundworks sub/sat speakers (I think they're the MicroWorks model) as my 3rd or 4th monitoring option, & they're invaluable. I've even mixed a record entirely on those speakers! They sound a bit odd, with no high end at all, but they image remarkably well, & mixes that sound balanced on them translate really well to other listening environments.

tivoli model 2 . SWEET!! thumbsup

or check out this creative labs deal. I think its a good idea to have a pair of monitors that don't have much bass... lotsa stuff gets heard on laptop speakers, tv etc, so getting a 2.1 computer speaker system means little to me when it comes to checking mixes for these end user situations.

I use an obnoxious JVC bookshelf system for my "car" simulator.. it has 2 extra sub speakers & is one of my favorite references. well, that and an auratone in mono. the speaker in a Studer machine is pretty cool too... and a shitty Sony ghetto with "mega" bass. hmmm...

I have a JBL "creature" on my macmini and it's OK.. but it's really a lot better for watching dvds than it is for music.. too many holes in the mids.

didn't advent or paradigm make some laptop speakers awhile back that ppl were loving??? I seem to remember...

Have you considered the fostex 6501b 's ???

They're worth a look and VERY common with the video guys.

ive got a set of 3-way ported technics circa 1985-1990, and a pair of panasonic bookshelf speakers from the early 90's, both with recievers that have various ghetto EQ's and a "bass boost"...unfortunately i dont have any real monitors right now, though 824s were my nearfields.

These Fostex are actually really nice self powered monitors for A/B ing.
Soundwise very close to consumer speakers.

I have a set of PSB Towers. Two 5" woofers and 1" tweeter. They are more in the audio file league. But really give me a great real world view of my mixes. Beautiful stereo imaging, tight but full low end, and a slick top end. They sound killer, but nothing like studio monitors. Boom boxes are also very useful. What ever you get, spend lots of time listening to records on them, or you could be in for lots of recall sessions if you rely on them for critical balancing.
