Better Drum Sample Collections

What are some of the better drum sample cds out there to invest in just in case I get one of "those" drummers at my place?

I know Bang was talking about making one, but I haven't heard much about it since.

Thanks,
Brandon

Just got Drumkit from hell Superior. Haven't heard anything better for acoustic drums. Dunno if that's what you're looking for.

I've also heard good things about drumkit from hell, but haven't used it myself.

Do you already have a drum replacer that you are working with?

I am currently using Drumagog and can highly recommend it. It's Fast simple and accurate. There are also sample cds avail for use with drumagog

Here's the link to the demo:

http://www.drumagog.com/download.asp

If you are strictly looking for samples you might also want to chek out:

Drumkit From Hell Superior is by far the best sounding library IMO, especially if you include the Custom & Vintage library.

BFD is a good # 2 on the list, be sure to include the XFL library upgrade.

I do a lot of drum programming/replacing, and I end up using DFHS 80% of the time, with BFD for the final 20%.

If you can afford it, I say get both.

How's DFHS work in PT? Is it a library or a plug? I don't get it.

Brandon,

If you are using Drumagog and don't already have them I can recommend the Dan's house vintage drums and also Rock drums vol. 1

IMO - I feel the Dan's house vintage set is the better of the two, but both a totally useable. The other nice thing is that both cd's are already in the .GOG file format so all you have to do is install them and they are ready to go.

Regards,

Chris

DFHS and BFD are virtual instruments (as well standalone applications). I use them as VI's in ProTools via Rewire.

Wonderful.

Do you have to use the virtual instruments on the drumkit from hell? Can you load the individual samples into drumagog?

Myself and two friends made a multipule velocity drum sample collection about two years ago. We recorded everything through a vintage emi neve desk (with a little eq and compression 1176's, Alan smart's ect), then straight onto 2 inch tape, which was then recorded into protools via AD8000s for editing. We recorded three kits, a 6 piece DW, a 4 piece Slingerland and a 4 piece ludwig. We did the ludwig deca tree style...it sounds freakn huge. Also we recorded 15 different snare drums.

I still haven't heard anything that sounds as good as the samples we made. Maybe it was the tape but when you program a beat with the samples it just sounds together, like a real kit in a real room (with real tape weight). We kept the room samples seperate ala DFH.

Been meaning to put them into some kinda package to sell for ages.... Ah well maybe one day.

The example is of the Ludwig, big and roomy Deca style.

I can't speak for DFHS, but the BFD samples are wav files, but the deal with BFD is having the signals from the different microphones. But sure, you could just use the .wav files as they come. If you double click one, it plays back in Quicktime, and it says .wav, so, sure.

What we've done to get BFD sounds in drumagog is to set up a track with one midi note, then loop it until we've got the balance of all the BFD sources right, then we export that.

a drumagog/BFD plugin is supposed to be released soon (been pushed back from spring 05) that lets you replace drum tracks utilizing the BFD sound engine - so you get all the alternate hits, mixer matrix etc.

I'm about 63% sure that every drumkit from hell release after version 1 doesn't use easily accessible .wav files. sure you might be able to extract the wavs from their data files if you're really clever, and don't mind doing some extra work, but the stock format I don't think is .wav.

I'm 63% sure.

63%.

I have the Bob Clearmountain Drums 2 for Akai.
They still sound surprisingly good with a lil bit of work.

You can use the DFHS samples with drumagog, but you loose half the value of the samples. The DFHS samples are made to be rendered with the bleed between their mics. That's what is so nice about them. Just hitting a single drum sound on DFHS sounds ok, but really nothing like the whole kit bounced and playing, which is fantastic.

Agreed - DFHS will only be half useful if you merely need sample replacement fodder.

But it really works like a charm as a stand-alone drum kit replacement.
I've successfully tricked a number of drummers into believing they're hearing a real kit...

FWIW, I'll be releasing a new sample set on my website within the next few months: www.musicians-samples.com

I sampled a beautiful DW kit, using NEVE 1084's, API and Chandler pres...Neumann, Soundelux and Royer mics....done in a large, top-notch live room.

The kit will contain bleed between mics (and the ability to adjust the amount of bleed) as well as a tremendous amount of volume layers and redundancy between layers.

The price will be very reasonable.

Yeah, thanks. I'm only charging $20 for those samples, which I think is a pretty good deal too.

My next set of samples will be a definite step up in quality and variety. Stay tuned...

I have a Clearmountain drum sample CD from about 5 years ago and it still has the best acoustic drum sounds I've heard.

Drumagog with the "Rock-Drums" collections...

It's the next best thing to having a drummer with a good kit.
