One of the greats who never received the widespread recognition his music merited. And still young

Always the left-handed showman... this will make for one heck of a memorable tribute.

God rest ye, Mr Chilton.

Bummer! I was listening to him when I was 5 and he was 16...that 45 of "The Letter" was a huge influence on me from the get-go.

Raise a proper Irish toast to Mr. Chilton...St. Patrick's Day will never be the same.

He was only 59. It seems like he'd been around forever. Imagine having a #1 hit when you were only sixteen.

All three of the Big Star albums were brilliant. The third one (Sister Lovers), possibly the most depressing collection of "pop" music ever recorded (right up there with Lou Reed's Berlin), is one of my favorite albums of all time. I once asked Chilton about it. He said: "I hate those songs. I was drinking way too much back then."

It's been said a million times about Big Star (and the Velvet Underground) that probably only a few thousand people actually bought their records when they originally came out, but it seemed like every one of those people ended up starting their own band. There's probably no greater tribute than that.

In this town television shuts off at two
What can a lonely rock 'n' roller do?
Bed so big the sheets are clean
You're girlfriend said you were nineteen

The styrofoam ice bucket's full of ice
Come up to my motel room and treat me nice

I don't wanna make no late night new york calls
I don't wanna stare at those ugly grass mat walls
Chronologically i know you're young
But when you kissed me in the club you bit my tongue

I'll write a song for you and put it on my next lp
Come up to my motel room and sleep with me

There's a bible in the drawer don't be afraid
I'll put up a sign to warn the cleanup maid
There's lots of soap and lots of towels
Never mind those desk clerk scowls

I'll buy you breakfast they'll think you're my wife
Come up to my motel room and save my life

Well, I'm certainly post-GenX, but I didn't have a CLUE who Big Star was until I got into the Posies 6-7 years ago. "Hey, these guys play in another band..."

Great songs. RIP.

I used to see him play at Lounge Ax in Chicago before the mid 90s Big Star resurgance. Such a great performer. He once indulged a fan who shouted out a request for "the girl from iwo jima".

Rest in peace.

Sad indeed! He was currently 3 songs into a new project he was producing for a local artist - Johnny J - at the studio I work at. Such an amazing artist/producer. I'm just shocked and devistated.

The morning show on my community radio station played all music either by or directly influenced by Alex Chilton. Wow. Just wow.
