2" Tape Transfer - Where?

Hello!

Can anyone recommend a place that I can have some songs I have on 2" tape (3 reels, 32 track) transferred to either .wav or .aif format on a harddrive or DVD? The has been stored in a cool dry studio but the tape is around 15 years old. The tape is taking up too much space and I am tired of storing it but can't bring myself to throwing it out (even though I know I will never use it).

I have called a few places, but no one has a 32 track tape machine.

Thank you,
Brian

There is a studio here called Hunnicutt recording that has a ton of tape. He told me he can transfer anything..

PM me for his info.

Try calling Steve at Sonicraft in NJ. (www.sonicraft.com).

I'm honestly not sure if he has 32 track (pretty unusual), but he has just about every analog format I've ever heard of covered.

He does really good work - restoration as well as transfer if needed.

Oh yeah.

The Otari MX80 with 32-track heads...total oddball format. IIRC they had some kinda whacky spacing that would allow you to take a 2" 24 reel and add 8 more tracks. I don't remember Tascam having a 2" 32-track but it wouldn't suprise me.

If you want to get SUPER weird we could talk about the 3M & Stephens 3" tape decks. I've never seen one of those, just heard stories from the old-timers that lifted the 100 pound reels onto 'em!

Anywhoo...best of luck trying to find a place to transfer those 2” 32-track reels. A bunch of years ago there was a place in NYC called the Transfer Mat that was operating out of the Toy Specialists space, and of course that's no more. You might have more luck putting “ 2” 32-track transfer” in the subject of the thread. Somebody’s gotta know somebody with a working deck, I mean…they must’ve made at least a dozen of the things. They can't all be scrap by now!

Peace,

Well they must have Alzheimer's because that machine was made by MCI... and from what I understood, never made it off the AES floor into commercial production.

Thanks for the replies. hopefully one of these places can make the transfer.

As an aside, I made this recording in the late 80's with a guy from London named "Howard Condor" he was the drummer in a band in the 60's called "Unit 4 Plus 2" and they had a single called Concrete & Clay. Anyway, I remember we recorded in Howards converted garage. We recorded on an old Trident board that he said Queen recorded Boehemian Rhapsody on. I wish I had payed more attention at the time, Howard was a great engoneer and had tons of cool gear. Any of you guys know Howard?

Peace,
Brian
