Thread Starter | Decently Priced Studio Monitors
I have been looking around for a new pair of monitors that will give me pure, uncolored sound, but that will not cost a load of money that i dont have. I was looking into the Yamaha HS50Ms. I use Tannoy Reveals at work which sound great but are obviously out of my price range. Any Ideas?

You will get the most sound-for-buck with passive monitors and a good, used amp.

If Tannoy Reveals are out of your price range, you're probably on the wrong forum.

The KRK5 and KRK8s are popular in the same price range as the Yamahas. Bx5as too. I don't know - for that money, the Yamahas are good.

I like my Yamaha HS80 for just a little more coin. Try and find a used pair for your budget.

Something like this with a decent amp would be pretty serviceable: Tannoy Reveal 6 passive monitors (pair) - eBay (item 380212140969 end time Mar-13-10 19:57:07 PST)

Hi mate someone I know was strapped for cash and needed some monitors and wont shut up about the SN10 so I take it that's a positive thing. For the price it's always an option. An NS10 inspired design? Not heard em myself yet. also I hear samson Rubicons are worth a listen. "Studiospares" Studiospares SN10 Nearfield Monitors Pair at Studiospares ![]() Cheerio |

If you are willing to buy used, you can find great monitors cheap. New, a pair of HS50M's are $400, so I'm guess that's your range. I picked up my pair of M-Audio EX66 monitors new for that price on eBay, because they have been discontinued. Compared to other monitors I've owned in a similar price range, I prefer them to Mackie HR824's and KRK V8's. You could try to seek out a pair of JBL 4410's and an Adcom GFA-545. That would be a very nice set up, and sound good stock but from what I understand with a little bit of modification work from Jim Williams they'll hold their own against monitors way above their price range. |

I like my passive Tannoy Reveal 6s a lot. You might want to remove the wire mesh in front of the tweeters, though.

They are not for sitting back and listening to your favorite tunes. But boy you can get some real radio friendly mixes out of them, just like the old NS10s...I've really been impressed with these. Adam A7s are a lot more money and lot nicer to listen to, but you can get real work done on the little Yamahas. TH | |

| Oh dude, I just got a pair of Event ASP8's a few weeks ago. They are incredible. I can't believe how much better my mixes gotten since I bought them. I'm hearing every little thing through these. The bass response is tight and accurate. I can't recommend these monitors enough. They're way better than I expected them to be. I only paid $500 for them, it was a steal. They used to sell new for $1,300 and they're worth more than that.

No reason why the HS50M can't be learned like any other speaker to achieve good mixes. They are decent enough for sure. War |

| Search A7's and you'll find that while a lot of people really like them, they've had some quality control issues... and personally, I don't like how they sound... too synthetic/plastic for my taste... which makes sense given the materials used...

I have 2-year-old Adam A7s and they broke for no reason. That's after the first pair didn't work out of the box. A friend of mine had a pair that also broke after a year. They're awesome sounding monitors. Their quality is suspect. I just wouldn't recommend spending > $1000 on monitors that will fail on you. Who needs that shit. |

I use a pair of active Event TR-5N's and have had them for about 6-7 years. I like em for what they are, and the price point back then. Sure, they're not the greatest, but if you learn on them, and a/b mixes alot, you can get suitable mixes out of them. I know their disco'ed but I'm sure you can find 'em used pretty cheap.

The B&W 685's are absolutely great. I was considering Genelec's, ADAM A7's, Focals, etc. and spoke to a friend of mine who is a fairly accomlished producer. He recommended the B&W's, which he also uses after using almost all the others in my list. The 685's are beautifully true and unhyped. If mixes sound good on them they sound good everywhere else. They also let me hear things in mixes that I have never heard before.
