Thread Starter | The rule of 3
Hello, I saw a interview today on sound.org with Dave Pensado. He is talking about the rule of 3rd. Well, I understand the rule in the visual world but in the audio world..... Can someone shine his or her light on this subject? BTW, great interview with Dave, go watch it now!! Thanks, Bart-Jan |

Might he be speaking of the 3:1 rule? This rule is named for the minimum ratio that will generally give the best results when micing a single source with 2 mics. For example, if one mic is 6" from a source, then any other mic must be at least 18" from the first mic to reduce phase problems.

I thought it was 5 max? I could be wrong though. There is another 3:1 rule involving stereo mic'ing. For every 1 Ft back, the mic's must be 3 Ft wide and so on I believe.

damn, there are a lot of rules dealing with the number 3!!! The first one that comes to mind is the one dealing with phase and multi micing something. |

I think he's talking about the "3 strikes and you're out!" rule. If you can't get the mic right by the third try, it's a long humiliating walk back to the bench, son. Next batter!

In art, there is a method for dividing the canvas into 3rds both vertically and horizontally. By orienting your scene to these lines you create somewhat repeatable visual-impacts for the viewer. I am not an artist but took a few classes in college. Dave is alluding to applying a similar approach to the soundstage i.e regular repeatable methods for building a sonic landscape that you can use to create different emotional impacts from the music. That's my take. |

This is all rubbish He is obviously talking about the rule that states "for every one piece of gear you buy, you must now start looking for 3 complimentary pieces of gear to go with it..." Come on slutz, you know the score!!
