Everyone bitches about the piracy and future security of engineering jobs... looks like the musicians may have something to worry about to.

Some darn good questions in there, but not many answers... "The question is not to know if machines have a soul, but to know if we humans have one".

However, music is a form of communication, right ? Besides the soul question mentioned above, communcation requires a intention. Computers have no intetntions whatsoever, so the guy who codes a piece of software capable of writing emotional music is the commmunicant. The computer is the tool, fine by me.

Well, I listened to the clips and I must say that I'm not impressed. Well, actually it's a great accomplishment that he could program a computer to compose that well, but it's kind of like a dancing bear - what is amazing is not how well the bear dances - because It's not that great - but that it dances at all.

I think that the only composers who need worry about their jobs are real hacks - anyone with talent won't find much competition here.

Soul? Nope, at least not that I heard. I heard something more along the lines of a first year music student practicing fingering exercises.

Composition, to me, is all about intent...the original emotional/conscious impulse translated to musical form. As the man says a computer is just another kind of shovel and you don't congratulate a shovel for digging a hole. Unless it's a Neve/Fairchild shovel I suppose.
