What exactly is parallel compression?

Forgive me for asking, but what exactly is parallel compression? I assume it is compressing a submix with two independent compressors rather then a stereo compressor. This way each compressor can act independently? (just a stab) Why is this essential?

I have just recently started bussing my drums to a stereo buss and really squashing it with the Bomb Factory 1176 plugin and then mixing that in with the drum tracks. It sounds great and I love it. Is this parallel compression? Is this what I would do with vocals and guitars too?

Thanks for any help.

Yah. I could have searched a little more.

Thanks for the thread. I found a couple more good ones too. Sounds like I'm on the right track.

Thanks again.
