Much cheaper than $1000..... but seriously worth checking

Shure SM7
EV RE-20
Sennheiser 421

all dynamics (hence the price) but all great ROCK vox mics.....

Beyerdynamic MC834 = good rock vocal mic.

ADK TT = good all purpose tube mic.

Lots of stuff in that range.

Soundelux U195. You will not be dissapointed. Or if you want more options...

AKG 414 B ULS + SM7 (used 414 w/ new SM7 should still be under $1000)
AKG 414 TLII + RE20
AKG 414 + PPA LD2ube (Pacific Pro Audio multi-pattern tube condensor)

With any of these options paired with a good pre and a good compressor, then it's up to your mic placement, the room, and whether or not the vocalist has any talent.

Or you could keep saving your money and get a U87, but for my money I'd get the Soundelux U195.

Using a Soundelux U195 a lot now. Just getting to know this mike.

And (about to duck) NTK into a UA 610 sounds really good to me.

You really gotta try the mics and see how they match if you are looking for a mic for one particular singer. You might find that a $75 SM58 is the perfect mic.

I don't think you'll ever find one mic that is ALWAYS right but.....If I could have just one....Shure SM7b. No question.

I think that a U195 and an SM7b would cover your bases most of the time. Be a slut...go for two.

Have to add I can almost guarantee a u-195 will be too bright for a screaming rock singer. I don't scream (and have kind of an arier but not strident voice) and it sounds like crap on my voice. Great for acoustic guits though.

Depends on the voice. You're right it can be too bright, but that's why you need an SM7b too....
