Mic repair in Canada...?

hello all,

I just got my hands on an AKG D12e. It's in great shape, but somehow it is missing a screw internally and the components are just flopping around in there...

I'm dying to get this puppy fixed.

Who would you trust with servicing your mics in Canada? I'm in B.C. BTW....

Thanks,

-Z-

Backline?

Hi Zak!

I've trusted my mics to Richard at Backline Musician Services in Vancouver and he's done a great job on every one.

He's currently got my Dragonfly Deluxe...

Here's the link...

Good Luck!

I've got a pair of 87's that need servicing (likely capsules need cleaning) and would like to send them somewhere more specialized than my usual techs (Backline). Thinking about taking the plunge to send them to Klaus in the US but thought I'd see if anyone in Canada has that kind of rep (or nearly).

Anyone sent a U87 to Doug Walker?

Are there any other mic guys in Canada who should be mentioned in this thread?

Thanks!

I know a well respected engineer in Canada who's sent a lot of mics to Doug Walker. He said the 87's came back sounding unreal.

Did you grab the $800 vintage 87 off of Toronto Craigslist that was up last week?

Ha! I was looking at that one too! I guess someone beat me to it.

Regarding Doug, I haven't used him personally but he has been highly recommended by a few people I trust.

Thanks everyone for the quick replies. I'll send Doug an email and see where that leads. As always, further suggestions are welcome.

Regarding the vintage 87 on C'slist...didn't see it myself. No such deal for me! Paid a decent to fair price for the seq pair, but they are unusable as they are. Hoping it's just a cleaning required. They sound very hard and brittle in comparison to the other one I have and I believe they are all from the same era.

PS: Zak, how's your D12? Where'd you end up sending it?

John Vrtacic of Vrtacic Design. While he's apparently scaled back his full time work with Armory and Warehouse Studios, he was Chief of Tech services for both studios for a good while. No offence to Backline, but given the choice, my mics only go to John, hands down. His rates were even better. John did an excellent job restoring my 87i.

John's the man. thumbsup

He's located in N.Vanc btw.

Unfortunetly John Vrtacic passed away a few months ago. Never met the man, but very very sad nonetheless.

An update for an old thread...

I just got my C414EB w/ck12 back from Doug Walker. No major repairs, just cleaning the capsule, noisy switches and a general checkup.

Doug was very personable, professional, communicated promptly and took alot of time to talk microphones with me. His rates IMO were VERY reasonable.

I highly recommend Doug to anyone needing work done on their mics in Canada or otherwise...thanks Doug!

'Where' is Doug located, east or west? Since the unfortunate passing of John Vrtacic, I've been hoping to find another competent tech, preferably in BC...

Backline also isn't an option, based on passed experience..

Corey Dixon who's worked with John for around 15 years is still doing audio work around the Vancouver area. He's great, and I'd recommend him for anything you may need.

He can still be contacted through John's website.

Well this is good to know. I actually fired an email off to John's old one associated with the site wondering if anyone was continuing with John's work and designs, but never got a reply. I was actually going to send an email off to Paul Silveira @ Armoury to ask who he uses to service their mics. Thanks for the info.
