Stewart is one of my favorite drummers. As a former lead singer and songwriter in a band I can say though that I've had my fair share of fights with drummers. Of course those drummers couldn't hold a candle to Stewart Copeland.

Yeah Stewart

Stewart kicks ass man with his back beat emphasis as I saw it back when. More fusion than rock I thought at the time....Who could ever believe that there isn't a need for KILLER drummers in this day and age(as someone asked in some other strange post on GS)????

worked for stewart one show (for the rental backline company) with a huge italien (20 people) band. He really hits the kit hard! I had to change the skins (evans g2 BTW) after the soundcheck...and they were destroyed after the concert. But the sound is like He mixes the drums upfront...very impressive...And he is a polite gentelman

YouTube - Stewart Copeland - Pizzica degli Ucci

I'm 40 years old and I think for a lot of musicians my age, the Police were one of the most influential bands of our time. I wore out three vinyl copies of Zenyatta Mondatta and can still play every song on the album. I haven't always been a fan of his solo work, but Sting's bass playing is a huge influence- his muting, the space in his lines, how melodic and hooky they are and how big they sound.

I heard a great story the other day from a local producer here in St. Kitts, that the Police would stop by on their way to record in Montserrat.

They would hang out on the beach on the tip of the island, directly across from Nevis. The secluded beach area is called Cockellshell. Apparently they loved it there, and would always make a point to get off of the boat and chill.

Even though my interest in Sting has slacked off in the last few years, he is the reason I became the musician that I am. And yes to whomever said The Police were greater than the sum of their parts!
I had the honor of having lunch with Sting at his house a number of years back and he was quiet, but very nice and gracious. (he and his producer Kipper, super nice guy!, were listening to mixes of Send Your Love over lunch and it was so cool and over whelming to be there)

I think I'm going to go listen to Ghost in the Machine right now!

one more anecdote...

I saw the Police at the Virgin Music Festival in Baltimore, MD about two summers ago... at the time I wasn't too familiar... I could tell they were doing something pretty good, but I instead walked over to see Modest Mouse or something... now I am kicking myself! doubtful I'll ever get to see them again. probably accounted for the huge ticket price as well

I agree with the "space" comment a few posts ago, the Police have so much of it in their sound

also, on the topic of recording, I want to give myself props for calling it... Synchronicity was recorded on a Neve console. you can hear the "softness" of it in the high end, which was the clue to me. I am in preamp-mode right now, currently searching for a good 4 channel pre to add to my studio.

the console was the Neve Air Montserrat, one of three ever made, it currently resides at Allaire Studios in New York. sorry if this has already been mentioned... the article I found this in is here Allaire Studios acquires rare Neve Air Montserrat analog console

Unfortunately, Allaire closed last year.
