I'm probably going to get hammered for this but many years ago our band played Manfred mans version of "I came for you" and I never heard Bruce Sprinsteens version. When I heard the bosses version I wasn't impressed

Some that come to my mind immediately:
  • Johnny Cash "One" vs. U2 (incl. the new one with Blige)
  • Johnny Cash "Solitary Man" vs. Neil Diamond
  • Probably all the Bettye LaVette songs from the "I've got my own hell to raise" album
  • Elvis "In The Ghetto" vs. who wrote this one?
  • Paul Anka "Smells like teen spirit" vs. Nirvana
  • Vader "Black Metal" vs. Venom
  • Faith No More "I'm Easy" vs. The Commodores

"Got to get you into my life"

The original by the Beatles is great, but the Earth, Wind & Fire version is fantastic! The ultimate version

Devo's cover of the Stone's Satisfaction is certainly the original's equal in my book. It is perhaps the best reinvention of an already great tune that I have ever heard.

FOLKS : One of the weirdest bands ever ! I dig their first 2 albums. AFAIK, Devo's cover of the Stone's classic is in some odd time signature with wacky syncopation. It's from their 1st album 'Are We Not Men : We Are Devo'.... which has the kookiest and craziest song in the world on it called 'Too Much Paranoias', which is literally 100 X weirder than that cover.

The Ataris' version of The Boys of Summer vs the Don Henley original. Shiny Toy Guns' version of DMs 'Stripped' also rivals the original.

Soft Cell's "Tainted Love" VS. Gloria Jones' original.
Bowie's version of "Sorrow" over the McCoys' original

The Small Faces' version of Whole Lotta Love released as "You Need Loving" with virtually the same arrangement two years before the first Zep album

Del McCoury Band - 1952 Vincent Black Lightning

I still like Richard Thompson's original version, but it's a little too "dark" for my personal taste.
