Aerosmith's version of Come Together is better than the original
also Van Halen's version of You really got me is way bigger than the original

Lady Marmalade by Labelle - killer dance floor filler!

Compared to the writer's version by The Eleventh Hour - instant mood killer.

Hard to believe Patty could hear the hit but she did.

Now that's what I call a surprising cover. I'm stunned. I had *no* idea.

Piano solo : at 1:54 there's a 'Chopsticks' reference, and later a 'Close Encounters Of The Third Kind' reference.

Al Green's 'How Can You Mend A Broken Heart' over the Bee Gees original. And most of Ray Charles' catalogue!

9 pages and no one mentioned Streethearts version of the Stones' Under My Thumb. Also The Isley Bro's version of Love The One You're With.

It's unforgivable that I totally forgot about that one since I went to school with a relative of Kenny Shields (who kept bragging that he was related to him, but I never believed him, until his Mom verified it).

Diehard Stones fans might consider the preference blasphemy, though. But it's a *great* cover. Many think it's the best cover version of a song ..... *ever*.

STREETHEART---UNDER MY THUMB - YouTube

EDIT : WARNING !

This cover is smokin' hot. I had totally forgotten how it *burns*. Definitely in a elite category, showing us exactly what modern rock is missing : raw, organic dynamics in a dedicated and extended instrumental section.

*WOW*.

Seriously, wow.

It's good but not a patch on the original. A lot of dubious stuff on this thread!

twist and shout, beatles > isley bros

and no way any one else's version is better than the stones' satisfaction.

I gotta say I like all the covers on that "Otis Blue" record more than their originals, except maybe My Girl

I have to mention Waylon Jennings version of Lucille. I heard it at least a hundred times and did not realize Little Richard wrote it.(i"m very familiar with Richard's version)If I had not stumbled onto the songwriters credit I still wouldn't recognize it and that kills me 'cause it is less of a "changed" cover than Devo's Satisfaction.

I really enjoyed this fun thread and I want to mention 2 covers that I really like
1. Phantom 309 by Tom Waits
2. Do You Want To Dance -I saw Brian Wilson play this -AWESOME !!

I couldn't imagine loving anything more than the the Chris Bell version of "You And Your Sister"- but then I heard This Mortal Coil's arrangement.

More recently, the Supergrass lads' version of Lovecats on their excellent Hot Rats album.

I can't believe some of these were not mentioned:

Gloria - Patti Smith version kills Them's version

2001 Theme - Deodato version a great take on the original orchestral version

Wild Thing - Hendrix destroys The Troggs. X did a fantastic version also.

Cause We've Ended as Lovers - Jeff Beck's version is better than Stevie Wonder's even without the vocals.

Wrong Piano - Cowboy Junkies do Vic Chestnut proud and own it

Lots of ones mentioned already I agree with but I have to clean the vomit out of my mouth when I see someone say that Guns and Roses did a better version of "Knockin' on Heaven's Door" than Bob Dylan. They ruined that song 10 different ways. Sorry....I am done venting now ;-)

Buddy, you have no idea how many times I have felt that way during my perusal of this thread. I won't say which ones, because everyone is entitled to their tastes and preferences, and you can't waste time fighting with people about the things they like and don't like, but WOW! Some of these truly shock me.

Of course, I'm sure some would feel the same way about some of my picks, too.

I've probably already said this on this thread, but SRV's Little Wing beats Jimi's in my book, no contest.
