Graces vs Great Rivers: Pre amp conundrum!

Hey all,

Situation: After comparing the grace m pre amps and great river me pre amps on guitars and male/female vocals, I decided I like both.

Question: Should I get 2 channels of one of them and save up/wait to buy the second, OR should I get 1 channel of both? My budget is around $2,000

Would getting one channel of both be unwise for resale and actual use? I feel like having a one channel system might be a little impractical being that I use more than 1 mic at a time in a lot of situations...

Anybody have any experience with this?

I'd go for two of the same pre so you have a matched pair for stereo work. I've used the Grace and the Great River and way prefer the Great River.

I mean from my understanding, the Grace is solely a "clean" and "transparent" pre.

While the great river is also very clean, it adds some subtle coloring too?

I have both and also much prefer the Great River. I like the Grace but it only does clean gain. The reason why I keep it is because its clean gain sounds different than the GR's clean and there are some sources that just sound better with it. But for the most part the GR sounds better on just about 90% of everything is way more versatile.

For recording guitar, how you like that GR compared to a Neve Portico 5012 or a Chandler Germanium?

My Recordings/Credits

I am a much bigger fan of Great River than the Grace stuff, but if you dig both of them, I would get one of each. That gets you both flavors you dig, and there is no law against doing stereo with unmatched mic pres if you should need to do stereo stuff.

I don't have the Grace, but I do have two channels of The River and use it on most everything. I love it much.

w/ 2k Id buy a GML if I wanted clean and punchy and If I wanted a Class A British flavor I'd go Wunder audio. Much better than GR...........

Also API is an option for phatt sound. More Versatile than GR especially nice on drums and gtrs. Also A-Designs Pacifica is very sweet on many sources in many situations.

so many options. My suggestion is block out a couple hours at a local studio that has a variety of preamps and go down there and cut some tracks. That will be the best investment you can make before you make a big 2k investment. I got burned a few times blindly buying preamps based on recommendations. If money is tight, try before you buy you will not regret it.

Definitely agree with the general consensus... get the Great River. I'd get the 1 channel cuz you could always add another ME-1NV and buying two ME1NVs is about the same price as a MP-2NV (no reason to buy 2 channels at once if there's no discount for doing so).
