Thread Starter | Can someone recommend a studio designer
Due to my 40 hourly rate I can't afford Berger or Stork. Is there someone out there who designs budget level project studios that may not have all the custom interior design but are on the same level sonically as more expensive studios. I know it's the person running the the gear etc...... I would think by now there would be more people involved in this field. I know John Sayers is a name I've been researching. Any others...Thanks Tim |

You might want to check Ethan Winer. http://www.ethanwiner.com/acoustics.html He usually visits this forum. Regards, Bruce |

I just had my room done by Frank Comentale and he's been a godsend. Frank has been designing rooms around NYC for 30 years including Hit Factory (original), Chung King, Wycleff's room and many others. He knows the high end but also can work with almost any budget. Anyone can tell you his rooms sound great and he's considered a best kept secret. Although I've worked in studios for many years, I've never had the challenge of building one until this year (we put in a room at Avatar so we were actually fitting into an existing space). It's very involved dealing with everything from acoustical, electrical, racks, positioning of gear, lighting and very importantly air conditioning (getting it quite). If your building into an existing facility you have challenges lurking behind every wall (pipes, grounding issues, noise leakage). One thing great about Frank is that he's encountered and solved virtually every problem and challenge you're likely to face -and he's good at coming up with inexpensive solutions (or he'll tell you the options from cheap to expensive and let you decide). Wow, I just realized I sound like an ad, but I have no affiliation with him other than being a satisfied client. My room gets a lot of compliments and he built some incredible looking custom racks that people are totally loving. Message me for his contact info if you want it. Best of luck.

Check out John Storyk - he's in New Paltz, NY. Very talented, and very nice, and has done a TON of studios - in many styles. http://www.wsdg.com/ http://mixonline.com/mag/audio_john_storyk_thirty/ Good luck

get through to didier weiss at www.soundwizard.net check out his site to see his work. i've been in two of his rooms. amazing! didier is a french guy settled here at auroville, near pondicherry, south india. if you send him floor plan correct to the last centimeter, he'll prolly send you a detailed plan and you can implement it yourself. this guy knows the math and the physics and hes very conscious of the human element. and i'm sure you can negotiate a very reasonable fee for his service, this is India and a dollar goes a long way. not as good as getting a designer to oversee the work, but best value for your money... say jai shankar sent you. cheers, self. |

Ken Goerres is an amazing acoustician, he knows more about sound than anyone else I've met in my 25+ years in audio. (310) 406-6016

Give a call/email to Blackmer Sound. Both Michael and Eric Blackmer are sons of David Blackmer-(founder of Earthworks, co-founder of DBX)- and have been designing and building studios succesfully for years. They are in Puerto Rico right now building a room but will recieve email... www.blackmersound.com Regards, Bruce Boege Limin Music Northport,ME |

Bruce Maddocks of Cups'n'Strings in Santa Monica is a great designer with many innovative ideas. He was formerly chief technical engineer at the Record Plant and Capitol Studios (where he oversaw the renovation of several classic rooms) and has designed and/or consulted on many commercial and private rooms, including the control room of my former studio here in Austin. He's also a well-respected recording engineer so he brings some practical experience to studio design and construction. http://www.cupsnstrings.com/html/studio_design.html

I'll try to contact some of the names mentioned. Thanks.......In this massive project studio market....I'm suprised at the lack of mid level designers.....I guess you get what you pay for and theres no way to change the laws of physics....and tools needed to control them tim |
