There has got to be a better limiter than my masterlink

Sometimes I use the limiter on my masterlink to get a better idea for how my mixes may sound after mastering (a little louder, a little more glue). I am recording digitally, but I do mostly alternative rock. I am actually surprised that using the fastest attack with 4 dbs of limiting doesn't sound too bad to me. Clients like the fact that it sounds a bit more like the real deal too.

I am sure there are much better ways to do this than the masterlink, but I am not looking to do my own mastering, just give my mixes a bit of juice and glue. I have read a ton of threads recommending the Drawmer 1968 or Crane Song STC-8 but those are a bit expensive for me. Is there something you think I may like that is more affordable or am a S.O.L?

Ann, how are you getting to your Masterlink?

If you are going digital, I would suggest a good limiting plug in. Which one depends on your platform/budget.

If you are going analog, there are many hardware units that you could insert between your mix bus and the Masterlink.

I have never used the DSP in my Masterlink. I guess I heard so many bad things about it that I never even tried.

There you go, mob mentality, I am Borg.

Yes, there are some perls left for the small money... but it needs searching and time.

1. Höf dynamic master (Austrian company): It's very good 2 bus brickwall-limiter and compressor, it's out of production, more or less seldom and goes for around 400-500€ on ebay (german ebay).

2. Philips "Polygram" stereo limiter: It's basically a modified SSL 2 buss compressor from the E-serie (those with the golden sealed dbx VCAs ya know) very "expensive" sound and also seldom but who knows? I paid 900€ for mine.

Good luck with your search... Andreas

I've heard wonderful things about the new Pendulum Audio limiter - supposed to be very musical/ invisible limiting. If you try it out, let us know what you think
