Cassette recorder 220V used in 110

I'm no electrician so any help would be appreciated.

I purchased a used Tascam 644 Mini cassette studio to get access to some old master tapes I recorded in the 90's. The best one I could find was from the UK so it has a 220 V input. Im in the US.
I thought a 12 dollar step up converter would solve my problem but a friend just informed me that the difference between 50 cycles and 60 cycles may cause the tape to play back at a different speed. Does anyone have any experience with this?

Thanks,

Joe
