Very interesting! So this is intended as a buscomp? Can you give us some audio examples of different materia?

Ditto on the samples. Would love to hear some rock guitar through it. Some decent drum samples can be found in the BEST drum compressor thread...

No, there is an extra knob on the front with no markings, that is what he is asking.

fragletrollet - For many of them in use now (maybe some of the current users can chime in) it lives on drum busses, but functions well with synths, bass, piano and guitars and vocals.

I will try to post samples soon.

surflounge - The stack! These units have existed in one form or another for a couple years now. I built initially for myself, and then friends, and then other producers, etc. I like the process of 'real world' testing so the gear has evolved organically, which inevitably leads to different versions, so

Yes, on those compressors that is variable Release. The Stereo Compressor and the Channel Amplifier available now are 'the base models'. I have Mods that are available for both. The Variable Release mod for the Compressor adds a Release control and changes the function of A/Rx10 to an auto-release. This Mod changes the operation and also the tone of the compressor a bit (all about how you use it). In use, they both have strengths - with the 1 knob control it's very immediate to turn up the Drive and then find a sweet spot on the ATTACK Knob and just go, but with the Release control version you can get more detailed. Here again maybe I can get some people that have experience with both versions to chime in.

On the Channel Amplifier the extra knob is Attack and the switch to the immediate right of Output engages an auto makeup, auto release FET compressor. The Output fader becomes the input control to the compressor. With the Attack control CW the compressor increases apparent volume but doesn't really sound compressed, but turned CCW can become much more aggressive. Operationally and sonically this compressor is much different then the Stereo Compressor.

The website will have these versions and their pricing shortly.

Thanks. I have been fortunate over the past couple of years to have my gear end up with some people I really admire.

yesssss!

the overstayer is the drum bus' bestest friend. i got two of them today.
jeff has the bug in the best way possible and this compressor is badass. very clever design, very clever price point, very clever indeed. it's absurd that for $500, one gets two channels of completely vibed out world class compression with plenty of sonic options. on drums, it has the mojo of slamming a pair of 1176's yet it has a sidechain filter.... and a "dirt" button... and other goodies. i love love love that it leaves a sonic coloration... a personality .... a footprint. three cheers for jeff turzo!!! more ideas, please!

great to get some more details! I suppose with the variable release function - you loose the ability to have long attack times? Are there some figures for the time constants on this?
Also - no ratio? Is this hard set at some value?

Sounding more and more tasty...

It absolutely shines on drums. It's aggressive and powerful nature pushes things forward with weight that most compressors can not. It's hard to explain but the amount of low end frequencies retained in your signal (post-compressor) is unmatched by others without additional gear. At the same time that very same gift works to your advantage the master bus.

I've found it useful with just a little bit of drive and the blend set around 3 or 4. It may feel like you're not getting your money's worth because the compressor it barely triggering but the second you press bypass you want to turn it back on immediately. When I use it in this application I think of it as a transient shaver that also brings the low level energy of your mix up. I don't want to mislead anyone in saying that it sounds like analog tape but the added 2nd harmonic distortion feels very familiar.

I got one of the channel amps from Jeff, and I have to say that it really is a nice piece of gear. haven't had a chance to play with it much, but I went to Jeff's house and he gave me like a 2 hour overview of the thing. it sounds just phenomenal. I wanted one immediately.

we ran drums through it: big, beefy, full, no distortion unless you want it.
bass: plugged straight into the computer, it sounded like the bass was running through an amp. that really impressed me.
guitar: made that thin digital sound go away instantly. full bodied, and very responsive. the harmonics are beautiful.

I am going to do some vocals with it today. as soon as I get something recorded, I will post a link to an example.

The really cool thing about this stuff, is that Jeff is a musician/geek who is doing it for the love of sound. Guy lives for this crap, and it really shows. I've seen firsthand the dedication he has, and he really put a lot of love into this gear. I am not a pro engineer/producer, just a songwriter who has become interested in technique. I have some okay gear, and now I feel like my set-up has just been bumped up considerably with this purchase. I really have no excuses not to have a quality sound anymore. So for what it's worth, this is highly recommended.

I received mine today and it has the variable release mod. I only had a little time to test it out at one studio, but I've brought back to my place, made some cables and will be mixing all day tomorrow with it. In the short time I had to play around (on a drum bus), I completely fell in love with this!

The mod seems to provide a very interesting interaction between the attack and release controls. There are a thousand great sounds lurking in this box and they are all usable. Some are (way...) dirtier than others, but there's attitude for days with this comp.

Lots more mucking about tomorrow and I'll post back after spending many hours with it.

Looking forward to hearing more! I wonder - is it a relatively short attack like a 1176? Or can it do longer like 20-40ms?
