Thanks bleen!! The guys at overstayer said they would try to get some files up too, so hopefully we'll get some stuff from them too. The dirt was a little more subtle than I expected but I think it sounds excellent.

Here is some more audio content with the Overstayer compressor. I simply don't have approvals to throw up vocals clips (a couple of you PM'ed me about) but here are some files that'll give you a taste.

The drum example is first a raw tracking bounce followed by a drum mix stem with Overstayer on the buss. Notice how powerful and punchy the second half is.

The rock guitar is a quick before and after with dirt engaged. These guitar aren't very good but within the context of the mix they bloom nicely around the other instruments.

On the alternative rock snippet notice how loud the sidestick is w/o compression and once engaged notice how loud it still is but everything else in the mix fills out.

In the pop example I love how it shaves the peaks of the drums and has so much more apparent loudness without feeling too smashed.

On the hip hop joint, which was already grimey around the edges, it is magnified yet contained without power being taken away with the Overstayer.

All three 2 bus examples are all just before & after examples, they were not mixed with the OS, it was added after the fact as an example. (Sorry I can't post unreleased clients files that were mixed thru muliple Overstayers...but they really shine.)

Here the are various examples:
Attached Files
File Type: mp3 Gearslutz OS Drums.mp3 (396.0 KB, 998 views)
File Type: mp3 Gearslutz OS Rock Gtr.mp3 (364.6 KB, 771 views)
File Type: mp3 Gearslutz OS Alt 2 Bus 2.mp3 (580.1 KB, 786 views)
File Type: mp3 Gearslutz OS Pop 2 Bus.mp3 (717.6 KB, 720 views)
File Type: mp3 Gearslutz HipHop OS 2 Bus.mp3 (369.5 KB, 675 views)

Mine is sitting on top of my rack with other non-rackable stuff I have (Crapulator & Embiggener). Only when I get a second one will I be concerned. And then....how will I rack this thing??

Gonna. That's not the question.

I asked the question 'cause I am gonna buy it.

And so are you. You know it.

It might be just me but it seems like this thing naturally pushes out the mid frequencies that need to be up front anyway. And thats a really good thing. It was amazing on those guitars! That blew me away and is probably enough to push me over the edge. And it definitely does something beautiful to those low frequencies in the bass and kick drum. I would guess that the introductory rate won't last that long so I need to go order one! Thanks guys for all your input.

Can the variable release model sound exactly like the un-modded plus have something else to offer?

Or are they different machines... if latter is the case ill just get the unmodded...

am I hearing distortion?

I noticed on the guitar track that it introduces quite a bit of distortion (not the pleasant kind) is this because of the fast attack/ release?
does the unit distort with fast attack times?
Love what it did to the bass on the Alt 2buss example.

The guitar example has the dirt button engaged and driven really hard. Like I stated, they don't sound very good soloed but within the context of proper content they bloom. The beauty of that button is you don't have to use it.

I'm wondering how the Overstayer preamp compares to the GAP PRE73??

Is this another Neve type clone??

Re release mod compressor - I asked Jeff this directly, and his reply was (I'm sure he won't mind me putting this here - its all good for ppl to know) :
Quote:
The Variable Release mod for the Compressor adds a Release control and changes the function of A/Rx10 to an auto-release. This Mod changes the operation and also the tone of the compressor a bit (all about how you use it). In use, they both have strengths - with the 1 knob control it's very immediate to turn up the Drive and then quickly find a sweet spot on the ATTACK Knob and just go, but with the Release control version you can get more detailed.
I got mine earlier this week, and am building up an 18v AC supply so I can run a few of these babies...my first was the modded one, but I'll grab another without it. My studio partner is thinking of getting 4 and mounting them in the center section of his 70's neve console..... fun!

My initial reaction for this comp is that you can't go wrong. I say it is destined to become an instant classic. At twice the price it is a bargain - and your audio will constantly thank you for it.

Cheers! B.

He may have tweaked it by ear, therefore not knowing an exact measurement...
Not a bad thing, a good set of ears can beat out algorithms...

Though I do like to geek out on the technical aspects, most of the tweaking was done by ear with real source material. Also this being a feedback design you can't really just plug in the numbers for the RC time constants and come up with the actual times, and even if you could the numbers aren't necessarily meaningful.

I will cautiously post some rough figures to give an idea of the timing, but you really just have to hear it! The dials and meter are intentionally arbitrary so you can turn the knobs until it sounds good and not worry about a setting being wrong.

On the Original version:

Attack range is <1ms to 60ms
Release range is 10ms to 100ms

A/Rx10 engaged:
Attack range is <1ms to 600ms
Release range is 75ms to ~1s

and on the Variable Release mod version:

Attack range is <1ms to 60ms
Release range is 5ms to 125ms

A/Rx10 engaged:
Attack range is <1ms to ~1s
Release range is 60ms + ~2s scalable downward to 6ms + 10ms

The racking hardware is being fabricated and will be available within the next few weeks. You will be able to mount 1 or 2 units together, and I will post pricing as soon as it is finalized.

Thanks for all the feedback y'all.

Jeff
