compression details

I'm trying to get real nitty gritty with compressors and wondering why most people are using. Take drums for instance, are you putting a compressor on a snare to tailor attack and sustain characteristics or to maintain levels between hits? What other uses...

I'm real curious about people's train of thought when they go to grab those attack and release controls.

Depends on the track and sound I'm going for. Sometimes I'll duplicate the track and use one track for EQing/Compressing the Attack and another for the body. I mainly do that in Dance music. Same for the Kick.

For both... but mainly to achieve a special sound characteristic. To maintain levels between hits I'm editing the tracks, sometimes I'm using compression... whatever works best. Attack and release settings depends very much on the sound I'm looking for and also on the sweetspot and charactaristic of the compressor.

compression on drums for the envelope. compression on busses for glue.

lately my favorite compressor for leveling is the fader. a few passes thru with the automation in latch and magic happens.
