Types of Potentiometers..Faders"A" "B" even "D"..tapers etc.

Wondering about the various types of (slide and round) potentiometers, faders etc..what type A, B, C (?), D...are usually used for a basic fader on a board or console?

As far as I can tell, A and B are the most common..D does exist.

Any input or info appreciated re uses..tone, volume, eq etc..?
