lol, ok i think 10 pres are a bit to much for most people, lets narrow it down to 5 pres....mines are

1-A design Pacifica
2-Presonus adl 600
3-UA 2-610
4-Great river mp-2nv
5-avalon 737

put avalon last for the only reason that i think is overrated and not worth what it cost

In no particular order because there isn`t one pre that does it all and I have not had the pleasure of hearing every pre thats ever existed but these are the ones I really love from what I have used or heard....

Avalon 737: I agree with etrella that its overpriced, but the pre does the job for most apps, its built like a tank, the EQ rocks and the DI is great on bass.
Martech MSS-10: probably the most open sounding pre I have ever heard on vocals and guitars
A Designs Pacifica: just has that smoothy silky sound to it... ahhh... most likely a 2010 purchase!!!
Manley Voxbox: warm, round, "in yer face" but not harsh, also overpriced.
Grace 101: the best pre in the $550 range, surprisingly open sound and balanced, especially on baritone vocals and acoustic guitar

I haven't even used 10 preamps in my life, unless we count crappy ones. Of the ones I have used:

1) Aurora Audio GTQ2
2) Neve 10xx
3) Daking
4) API

Clean gain for days:

M-Audio DMP-3 (though the meters are just about worthless

Offering both:
Sytek/Neotek pres; Sytek MPX 4 looks pretty hot, had good results with its brethren onboard a Neotek Elite I got to use

I'd be fine with a D.W. Fearn VT-2, a Chandler TG2, and 12 channels of GML. Can't think of anything else I'd want if I had those. I could even do without the TG2, that's just a "for fun" box really.

+1

The 501 is the most "go to" preamp that I have ever used and it IS MY FAVORITE by far of the other pres that I own and that I have used over the past 10 years!

The 501 is a Classic preamp design and true to the originals, so it's a WIN WIN!

haha... people only use digi pres if they have to.. ie tracking drums and you dont have enough pres so you have to send the rest of your mics through the control 24 or something 8P

My top two favs are

Electrodyne 201-A tube pre.... My goto vocal pre hands down!
Electrodyne 712L solid state, great eq too!

API style pres with different combonations of transformers, opamps etc..

Auditronics 110 console. I don't track through it but mix everything through it and love the eq's and the transformer ins and outs. The board just sounds big and warm and wonderful!

Also have Electrodyne 711L modules just racked and didn't get all of the bugs worked out of them yet. I'm sure they will sound great though!

If you feel the 737 is overpriced and overrated, then why put it in your 'top 5'? That makes no sense at all. While not my absolute favourite, I think it's a stellar piece of kit worth every cent.

I suggest that most (but not all) will post their 'fantasy list', rather than gear they have hard experience with, but never admit it. The few bits they own will always take out #1 spot, lusted gear will come soon after.

Not hating.... just saying.
