Thread Starter | Flipping Phase in Cans
Do you flip the phase of the signal you send to headphones when tracking vocals? Obviously, if you did this to the whole signal, there would be some cancellation of what you're trying to capture, but lately when I've been tracking vocals, I've been flipping the phase of just the band backing tracks going to the singer's headphones. This seems sensible to me, but perhaps I'm overlooking something.

The issue when recording vocalists is to get the headphone mix to in phase with the singer's voice live/in the room/in her head. Components in the signal chain can reverse polarity so you may need to add a "flip" in there to correct it.

I'd just get a nice set of cans that fit well, then solo the signer in the control room when they are tracking and listen for spill, and set the volume accordingly. Never tried this method, but the majority of times spill has been a problem in my experience is when a remixer needs the main vocal, and flipping the phase won't help in this case. |
