How to get that "Muse vocal distortion" live on stage...

Without a permanent live engineer... Some friends of mine are in a band, quite experimental stuff going on and they want to explore the possiblilities of using vocal distortion on stage, without having to rely on a sound engineer, since they don't have the money for a permanent live engineer.

We are thinking about using an extra mic and route it through guitar pedals or a tube preamp, but it would be best if we could just make a chain with a single mic and the ability to kick in the distortion whenever he wants.

Examples of the distortion can be found here:

YouTube - MUSE - "Hysteria + TIRO (the beginning)" Jonathan Ross Show

YouTube - WovenHand - Tin Finger - Oslo

Hope you guys can help me out! Long time visitor, near-first-time poster

Cheers!

Digitech has a box designed for vocal effects. Runs between the mic and console. It's here.

Think Bellamy goes through an Avalon737 for valve kind distortion and uses a Sansamp PSA for more distortion.
There may be another thing involved for more distortion. Their live guy is a member here so maybe he'll chime in.

Thanks fort the replies guys. Avalon would be a little overdone in price range, but that Sansamp is a great tip. Hope their live guy pops in and helps me out as well! Thanks!

Yeah - just get a low >>> hi impedance XLR-to-jack converter and use it with a sansamp pedal, eg tri-ac.

For more bells and whistles the TC Helicon or that digitech box

TC-Helicon | VoiceTone Create - Live Vocal Multi-Effects

you got the option sending two signals too, a wet and a dry one. you can mix them and send one signal out if no FOH at all

I played around with inserting distortion pedals, running the vocal through plus ins on the Venue, etc. I found that gain before feedback would become and issue. What I would recommend trying is an xlr a/b box that sends your vocal mic to a distorted guitar amp mic'd offstage. I think this is similar to what Feist and The Strokes do. You could also just have a second vocal mic that went into the amp chain.

you have many choises:

1- buy the wonderful COPPERPHONE
The Copperphone - Placid Audio

2- use a vintage broken micrphone

3- use (like I do ) Sennheiser MD21+a distortion box, I suggest
DEVI EVER silver crank
DEVI EVER punch love (better if you use it in send and return of the mixer)

4- use a megaphone
