Jazz Fusion drums... need a drum machine? or keyboard drums? or VST drums? helpchoose

Hi all, I've been asked to make a jazz fusion type recording with guitar as lead instrument. The client needs some kind of electronic drums... and I don't currently have anything to provide that with. I usually do all acoustic recording (real drums, in real rooms) so I'm not used to this kind of work.

What would you recommend getting a hold of for this type of session? A drum machine? A keyboard with a drum machine? Drum samples and beats in a PT plug? I have a midi controller I could hook up if necessary... its on-board sounds are old and dated hence why I'm looking for something new. If price isn't too high (under $1000) I could potentially justify purchasing. But rental is also a possibility if someone knows where I could get my hands on something like this.

Thanks for all your help! I'm looking forward to being educated in this new area of recording that I've never worked in!

This is what I use, a ZenDrum plus BFD, though I'm using BFD on the DAW instead of via the little VST host box that he uses.

Are you allowed to call it jazz fusion if there's no real drums? I imagine loops of some grooving measures would work for you, there's tons of stuff out there.
