Thanks to John Paterno

I just want to publicly salute John Paterno for his mix artistry on the Joni Mitchell song "River" as performed by Robert Downey, Jr. on the "Ally McBeal Christmas Album". My wife passed away a couple weeks ago and we played "River" at her memorial service yesterday. It's a tender performance by RDJr and John's mix was as sweet as it gets; there wasn't a dry eye in the house.

Wow. I am so sorry for your loss. I am thankful I was a part of something that helped you is some way. I lost my mother just over a year ago, and I know first hand the power of a song to express something that can be hard to say.

Best wishes to you during this difficult time.

John

I shared this with John but thought the rest of you should hear this story.

As I struggled last Friday to find a piece of music perfectly suited to evoke the emotions of the occasion, I commented to a friend how Robert Downey Jr would be the perfect artist to play at my wife's memorial service. My buddy had spent some time with Robert in Santa Monica just before his new album came out and I found his fragile, expressive voice and piano style were right on target.

That evening, I looked over a couple thousand CDs in my collection looking for the right song. In the last box of CDs I pulled from my garage, I found a sealed/unopened copy of the Ally McBeal Xmas album and saw Robert's credit. I listened to "River" and the floodgates opened.

If that's not grace, I don't know what is.

Thanks to all of you who've passed along comforting words, and to all who work to create and capture the human condition in music.

Steve

Hud...

A sad time indeed. Glad to hear that you were able to find an expression through music - your missive restores my faith in the medium.

John Paterno is extremely talented, but more importantly he is a wonderful person - sincere and passionate about his art, yet humble.

I hope that with your extensive music collection you are able to find some solace through the songs and lyrics of the artists you admire.
