I read this adbusters article sometime ago that pretty much sums up my feelings on the subject.

Wow. That article is every bit as hollow and posed as the hipsters he's speaking against.

"An amalgamation of its own history, the youth of the West are left with consuming cool rather that creating it. The cultural zeitgeists of the past have always been sparked by furious indignation and are reactionary movements."

Excessive wordiness cannot hide a lack of substance.
But I'll bet a lot of people think what this guy wrote is some kind of revelation.

Here's the truth (and the author hit the nail on the head with this one point):
"it is rare, if not impossible, to find an individual who will proclaim themself a proud hipster."

The author spent all night hanging out at a hipster club. So that makes him what, a scenester?
Insipid.

Some people have the taste of a 8 year old girl, pretty much the only thing learned here. Close this worthless thread.

It's not Keesha or Ketchup, It's Ke$ha, like Ke$ha haha

Respect where respect is due, that's a well done track, and album in general. It's been awhile since I've first heard a song on the radio and thought, wow that is gonna be big. Super catchy. The Nintendo style beats, love it. The Production is good. Her whole package is well done really and you have to at least give props for that, regardless if it was contrived or not, which it was. Lyrical content?? It is what it is...Perfect for the intended market, and as sad as that is, it's reality...

I still like Britney and Lady GaGa more though, although I think Ke$ha might be a bit catchier, she just doesn't have something the other 2 do...

I don't know... I think Gaga is more like Elton John.

Ke$ha has an edge. There's this Jerry Lee Lewis/Jagger/early-Elvis thing about her. And people can tell, they react like they did back then. She may use an 808, but her soul is rock'n roll.

Um, wheres your substance? That quote is fantastic in my opinion.

The article brings about many great points concerning the sense of entitlement of middle America and the problems with a culture primarily centered around irony. Its a culture without substance. He's not being wordy. The article is astute.

It's a little narcissistic, which is in itself a little ironic given the subject and thesis.

The quote is pandering to those who already agree. Not poorly written, nor wrong, or anything.

hmmm, dont think i agree with you there. He's simply writing like an academic.

His point is that there is a lack of authenticity within the hipster culture.

Also, it's a concluding point. And a strong one. Most conclusions tend to pander to those who agree.

Anyway, to flip sides for a minute, the thing I find a little short sighted about the argument is that maybe there isn't much wrong with the hipsters. Maybe it is sincere. Spoiled kids appropriating everything they see in the movies is what happens when they arn't under circumstances that challenging and intuitive. Maybe, its a culture created out of boredom.

My point is irony is something the well off do. When your struggling, you dont tend to have much sense for things ironic. There's no time.

Well, you know. There's the burning sensation, embarrassing trips to the medical clinic, the antibiotics from the smug pharmacist, then explaining to my wife how I brought stupid home....

And touché. That was a good reversal. Almost missed it.

Well, not writing like an academic. He's writing journalistically with a smidge attempt at an academic approach. It's really sort of an op-ed piece. That's not a condemnation, but academic writing is very different.

Which is an idea that is easy to agree with, seemingly even if you are a hipster.

The more interesting conclusions are the challenging conclusions. You aren't really forming an argument or being expository by simply setting up a straw man and toppling it with your final sentence. I just got the sense that the lack of a silver bullet conclusion was made up for with a few sentences that really just made us feel good about how we already felt.

I think it sort of backfires in that it's a condemnation of hipsterdom for being facile (is the author a hipster?), when facileness is arguably the thing they seek to embrace. If I were a hipster (am I?), I'd reply with, "Yeah, so?" It leaves a semi-interesting paradox, in any case.

Don't get me wrong. It's an entertaining read and succinct, and he has good turns of phrase. Just think it doesn't need to be read for more than what it appears to be.

Something like Evelyn Waugh's Vile Bodies is a better read on an arguably synonymous culture.

brushing with liquor redoux

I like the way each generation believes that their loose morals corrupts the next. The line about Jack Daniel's refers to Elizabeth Taylor in the 1960 Movie BUtterfield 8 when she wakes up in a strange room & brushes her teeth with last night's scotch. She won an academy award for the role. And all the youth that saw the movie were instantly corrupted. Probably why the '60's happened.
