with the Ampex model, no "punish", 1-2 drive and back off on the mix, and it does wonderful saturation effects.

Agreed here. While the core tech behind decapitator is capable of a LOT, we really restrained ourselves to keep the focus on this plug in the high-end preamp and culture-vulture-y saturation range, from somewhat mild to very heavy.

Phoenix is very cool for it's low order harmonic coloring, and we could easily do that kind of thing, but if we were to do something like that, it would be a different plug-in, and probably wouldn't need as much DSP horsepower either.

And REAL tape saturation is something else.

YES. If you've got any free time this week, please go ahead and just knock that plugin out. I'd be happy to buy it.

I think a better question would be: Decapitator vs. Culture Vulture.

I like Rviver a lot but Decapitator is far more versatile with more flavours...

quite complimentary to be compared to Culture Vulture....would be interesting to hear some comparisons. Of course I'd much rather have a real analogue process-but perhaps the difference is not as large as one might imagine...

I can't do a direct A/B but I have tried it on synths and vocals and it does the Culture Vulture thing good enough for my purposes. On extreme settings it somewhat emulates the chaotic behavior of a tube input stage being overloaded. Pretty cool. But I agree with the others on the gain staging. I wish it was easier to level match so I can hear what it's doing at more subtle settings.

I wonder - how difficult it would be for soundtoys to implement this?

I too agree on the level matching problems, especially with this kind of fx where huge level changes occur. The D16 distortion fx also have this problem.
