What's best way to find a producer (rock/pop)

Hi

Just wondering how different rock/pop acts hook up with their respective producers?

I would like to find someone to help me produce some tracks.

Thanks!

Shaun

look at some albums you think are produced well, and are in the same league that you're in, find the producer in the credits and give their manager a call

Or, conversely, look up some of the producer management agencies, check with them on what they got in the stable, see if any of them float your boat. The first question the manager is gonna ask is who is your label--if you dont have one they are gonna say goodbye or ask what is your budget. Depending on your budget they may or may not help you.

If your budget is relatively small, you might do better to ask around here, as there are several budding producers who are probably outstanding and can work within smaller budgets.

I suggest you compare your definition of 'producer' with whomever you choose to work with. The term is used loosley to say the least. And trust me, it's actual meaning is very subjective.

Help produce tracks?

What kind? What 'part' of the production?...Arrangment? Vocal coaching? Songwriting? Lyric writing? Performance Coaching? Actual recording (engineering?)

One last word of advice...producers are a dime a dozen....good ones are hard to find.

Good luck bro ...

Producers

I agree with the point that the word "producer" can be very ambiguous. Where I'm from, most studios have guys who will help you track your records, and will, in some half-hearted fashion, offer some feedback, guidance or prespective that makes them kinda, sorta, function as a producer. These guys are engineers, not producers IMO.

If I were you, I would send some demos out- both to guys on here- and perhaps to some guys you've found through records you like. Tell them what you're looking for, what your budget is, and ask for some real feedback on your stuff, as well as if you can listen to other stuff they've worked - perhaps in your genre.

IMO you want to find someone who is just as excited to work with you as you are with them, and you'll probably get a good sense about that from talking with them about your songs.

Good luck

Dave
self-annointed producer, etc

I'm a producer and award-winning songwriter with a short background in major label engineering. If you like, you can send me a private message, and I'd be happy to consult with you - whether or not I'm the right guy for the job.

Thanks, and if I don't hear from you, lots of luck

Did you see "Down By Law"? If so, remember when Roberto Benini observes, "Not enough room to swing a dead cat", reading out of his "book of english" in the prison scene where he meets Tom Waits and John Lurie - HILARIOUS.

What are you looking for from a producer would be the big question in my mind...do they have to engineer as well? Do you want a lot of musical input? Do you want some one who plays a ton of instruments, over-dub maniac style? Or maybe some one to assemble the right players for the project and stay out of the way? What records do you like?

Producer IS such an vague term...really think about what you think you need/want. Then look for some one who is already making/working on music that appeals to you. Then figure out if you can stand to be in a room with them for hours on end. You gotta be able to trust some one in that role.

What IS a producer?

I've heard a lot of definitions over the years but I think it was best said by Roger Waters. A producer is someone who understands what music is about and what technology is about.

Somewhere in that balance, you need to find out what kind of 'producer' will best serve your record. Is it someone who has creative ideas on how to present the songs and maybe make minor changes? Or does the project need more of a songwriting partner who's going to steer the ship? Maybe the band wants to have their hands on steering the ship, but the producer is going to make sure it stays on course (budget), over some advice and opinions and keep the boat away from the shore.

A lot of it comes down to ideas and budgets. Ultimately, you pick a producer not for the way they hear, but for the way they think...because they'll help to connect the band to their audience. As a producer I won't work on music that I don't like and don't fully "get". Because if I can't understand what to do with it, I'm gonna make a bad record and it's not in my best interest, or the artists’ best interest to have a bad record.

If it's a label project, with label money funding it...the label usually has a pretty good say on who's producing the record. If it's a small indie label or an unsigned band then the band/artist usually has either a good say or the choice is entirely theirs to make.

Best definition I've heard is:

"The producer is the one who decides when it's done!"

Some of the best producers have been fans who knew little or nothing about music or technology. Most of the best learned from at least one top producer or engineer before striking out on their own productions.
