| I was so glad to see this thread. I recently had to give up my full time job as the Lead Sound Technician at Harrah's because I didn't want to sacrifice the quality of my work. I also play in bands and noticed I needed monitors adjusted higher than everyone else especially in the higher register. The final straw was going part way through an A list concert with one of the pink noise buttons engaged on the Yammy board. I gave my notice right after that and a Doctor confirmed my loss of high registers in my left ear. Too many years in front of amps. I am 50. I've been to a few specialist and there is no way to repair the damage. A few thoughts from someone who has tried it all. Do not use the wax candles. Do not stick q-tips in your ears. If you have that habbit, break it. Go gentle on the water flush and your ears do need some light wax build up. If not, they will get dry and itchy. If music is your life (like it is to me), and you are young with good ears, take care of them. Like someone said earlier, life goes on, - I'm still working as a full time musician - just keep those monitors hot! |

| Gear maniac | Wow. after reading all these posts it made me feel lucky that my problem is so minor. Its bad to hear about your hearing loss but at least it won't get any worse. I wear custom -25dB plugs when im playing in my band always.

At this point I'm drinking a lot less alcohol then I used to and overall I feel and hear a lot better for it. Smoking is pretty bad too, especially if your injesting certain kinds of smoke...I started to notice that while I was doing FOH. Well, I actually noticed a couple of things while doing FOH. It always gets louder and brighter as the night goes on because your ears are shutting down, but their shutting down to protect themselves from further damage. I'd leave it at the same volume, or actually back the house down slightly if the room started to empty out. Nobody wants to get killed with volume...it's a lot of fun at the time but it adds up after a while. Earplugs always kinda suck, kinda like condoms. They protect your ears and that's worth it but they always change the sound a little bit. Even the custom fit plugs with a 15dB pad (and I tried the sports plugs too) always bump the low-mids and take some presence out. But, they are clear as hell and I can answer the phone with them in, plus they go in & out like a pair of shoes. It was well worth the $150 or so and there's no way I could've worked live for as long as I did without them. Even still, I'd pop them out every so often during a show for a 'reality check' since most of the people in the audience aren't wearing them. It took a couple months to really get the hang of hearing well with them in, but after five or six years with them there's no way I could live without them! I carry 'em everywhere, around NYC, in planes, the movies, anytime I approach a Guitarget...

| Bad ears in the studio A lot of pros do most of their mixing at really low levels. It's easier to hear balance that way. If you can't hear the acoustic guitars in a low level mix, they probably aren't loud enough. Another thing you can do is put a set of small speakers together, side by side, aimed at your good ear. And make a flip switch to reverese the stereo image in your main speakers, so you can make sure the mix isn't coming out heavy on your weak ear side. Get a box, some jacks and a DP DT switch at Radio Shack. Hearing damage affects people differently. Like sunburn. Some are more prone than others. By all means, protect what you have left. The more damage you sustain, the more susceptible you are to more damage. On the plus side, you can use bad hearing as an excuse when you're in a boring conversation and your mind starts to wander. |

| Zimv20 - yes, there is. If you use Q-tips you will only push the ear wax further into the ear. My doctor gave me an advice on how to clean my ears. Use that Q-tip, but dip it in olive oil and put some in your ear before you're going to sleep. I'm not joking, it's true. :-) |

| Wait wait wait wait WAIT.... In amongst all this talk about too many dee-bee in the megahurts of my ear canal did anyone happen to notice this wank-off has a "wank me chapter 1" sig file with a wank-o-riffic list of all the cool gear mumsie bought him AND A ****ING VIDEO OF HIM PLAYING ALONG WITH A TOTO CD SLIGHTLY OUT OF TIME AND TUNE!?!?!?!? WHY HAS NOBODY POPPED AN ANYURISM LAUGHING AT THIS SILLINESS???? Anybody wanna see me on video jamming to a CD too? Cuz I got some radical footage of me playin Aeorsmith's greatest hits with all my teddy bears and barbie dolls set up like an audience. I even got one teddy bear to hold a lighter during "Dream On" but unfortunately he died in a tragic accident at the AC/DC show I did the next week. Sweet Christmas help us all. ~S

CD, album, 8-track, wire, reel-to-reel, casette, SACD, DVD-A, wax cylinder, whatever, you still fornicated it up and you've still got TWERP all over you so thick it's dripping into a puddle on the carpet. Hades, you coulda been jamming WITH ToTo for all I know. And I'm not hijacking your thread. What I really meant to point out is that hell, maybe it's the wax in your ears that makes you miss notes, who knows!? Maybe it's the wax in your ears that makes you get a hardon for owning certain pieces of inanimate objectification. Then again, maybe it's the sopping, green wad of half-congealed, buffalo vomit wrapped around the wax in your ears that makes you such a pissant little twerp. Your thoughts? ~S

| Gear maniac | Thanks. I think hes just jealous that I can hardly hear out of one ear and still play a relatively difficult rock solo quite well. Not to sound like an idiot of course. He enjoys playing Eminem covers in Twisted Sister costumes. ![]() |

ell-oh-ell indeed my little friend. So, when you fire up that ax in public and miss notes and play off-time, do you quickly tell your audience that you've got a really killer post count at GearSlutz and that makes it all better? You friggen vagina. I was playing gigs when you were still suckling at the teat of the sow that bore you, son, I don't wanna hear a dang thing about talentless this or wanker that from some guy who films himself playing solos along with records in his momma's basement. When people look up "wanker" on www.m-w.com they see your video. Certain groups of the "cool" kids at certain high schools already say "Johnny is in the bathroom Zeppelin4Lifing off!" now-a-days. When you get near lesser wankers, they begin to orbit you, caught inside your immense wankerness. And what's better...the homo doesn't play the WHOLE SONG...he plays JUST PART OF THE SOLO. How wank-a-riffic can one bedwetter be? I'm reminded of a quote from BB King..."I don't know no chords...somebody else gonna haffa play the chords!" And by the way, Goes211 is a troublemaking rapscallion!!! ~S

I would record me playing the entire chord melody of 'Take 5' or 'Esther and Frank' or something, but I don't waste my time on troooooollls.

Ahh misery loves company.... Well this explains your totally professional level of training and experience. I cannot for the life of me understand why someone would post a video of themselves playing so incredibly poorly. Do you get aroused by your own mom or something, cause there is no reasonable explaination for your total lack of standards. Dude, getta a life.

| Where the hell have the mods been for the last couple of days. This place has been sh*t for a week with crap threads like this. Look man the kid played a classic solo from a great guitar player. Kinda cheesy to put it on a sig but so be it, who am I to judge. All in all not a bad bit of playing at all for a post MTV genreation young'n. Most guys his age are playing Playstation, watching DVD's or listening to tasteless music not sitting at home working on chops. I give him some credit, he has good taste in guitar players, at least one, and his playing was pretty damn good for his age, hell any age. When I started playing guitar 30 some odd years ago that is probably how I sounded, you probably did as well so cut him some slack. Why the hell do people get off on making other people feel bad about themselves? I just don't understand how someone can feel better about making someone else feel bad......
