getting 32 i/0 using 4 ada8000????

Is it possible to get 32 i/o using 4 ada8000 units??

I'm planning on getting a 32 channel board such as the Allen and Heath zed436.
Having only used a presonus firepod for many years I need to know what it would take to hook this up and function properly if its even possible??

What i would like to do is track up to 16 mics at a time (usually only 8-10). and then at mix have 32 channels from the daw to the 32 channels on the board. and record the 2 bus back to the daw.

so i'm thinking this is how it will work.
for tracking go from line out on console channel> line in on the ada8000>adat out>adat in on a sound card >daw.

and then for mixing: daw > adat soundcard > ada8000 line out > console channel line in.

Does this sound correct?

What adat sound card(s) should i use?

Does this sound like a decent set-up for the price?
console $2200 (zed 436)
converters $800 ( 4 x ada8000)
cables $ ???
adat card $ ???

Any input would be greatly appreciated.
Ok back to the search feature now.
Thanks.

Or try the Presonus Firestudio Lightpipe.

This is what I use to get various ADAT lightpipe devices in and out of the DAW. I have used it with four ADA8000s and it works very well for what you are trying to do.

Thanks for all the help.

I'm gonna lean towards the RME card. For the extra 3 hundred I get extra...
  • 1 x AES/EBU I/O (192 kHz)
  • 1 x SPDIF I/O (192 kHZ)
  • 2 x MIDI I/o
plus its PCIe which seems to get more love than firewire round here.

Hi chaps....just a thought:

Hijacking this thread shamelessly as I'm considering Alesis HD24XR with some sort of PCI to ADAT in between it and computer.......would anything be fast enough to record straight through, other than apogee symphony(i.e. cheaper...lol)? Raydat? Motu 2408 just for ADAT? Anyone?

Sure. I do this all the time. I first used three MOTU 828MKIIs, and now a Presonus Firestudio Lightpipe. There were a couple unsuccessful attempts to use an M-Audio Profire Lightpipe in there too.

Given that you can get 2408s pretty cheap, that would work just fine.

So the Firestudio Lightpipe latency is fast enough to route straight through while recording (running in this case on FW400/iMac Core2duo) you say? Very interesting indeed!!!! Thrying to avoid going to a PCI card mac, as I like my iMac, just felt like there wouldn't be a solution fast enough without going PCI.......VERY cool if this is......
