U67, a bit of tape delay, MCI board (I think) and poss a bit of EMT 140 reverb plate.

(Hearing him speak at the beginning, plus the song is a reminder of just how nakedly honest he was. Rock is like politics these days, no one seem to truly speak their minds anymore in case it harms their careers.)

Of all the bands and musicians I was into growing up, he is the only one that I really actually idolised.

It doesn't matter that he exhibited awful traits as a human, we have all done that, he also exibited some of the best, and on top of that managed to convery them perfectly through many, many beautiful songs.

What an amazing person. He will never be forgotten.

I suppose you have to have a mind first...Kanye speaks his mind, for example, it's just filled with nonsense. Maybe it's best if today's pop stars stick to dancing and pretending to sing. The politicians, however, might want to step it up...or not...

Did you guys notice the effect drops out after the bridge? Interesting. Is the record like that or just the version we're seeing here on Imagine?

It's the same idea...only digital...maybe cutting the highs on the delay is probably the best you can hope for...

There are a few delay plugins that "emulate" tape delays...the roland one for example...there are free ones as well...

It is definitely an old U87 (look at the opening on the back of the mic where you can see voltage)

the effect is called ADT, do a search... you can easily do it with a digital delay (look at the Digital Delay Handbook), however I think it sounded better with tape due to the print though...

KVR: vacuumsound ADT - Virtual Effect - adt vst.

and a delay set to time = 80ms to 130ms, 1-5% feedback, maybe 20% mix, with a wide bandpass filter on the feedback path. that'll get you in the ballpark. i threw together a plugin that's packaged with reaper called 'floaty' that does that sound pretty well.

It's a U67, U87's do not use that type of connector.

Cool song. Neat effect.

Nah, it's just good ol regular tape slap. 130-160ms depending on the gap between the heads. ADT would be a lot shorter, an almost "chorus-y" kinda effect.

They're not very common since a spider shockmount is more secure, but yet there is and was that type of connector for U87's.

Huh, I had no idea. Thanks for the insight, I've only seen those connectors on the old Neumann tube microphones.

Echoboy is a great plugin for emulating tape delay. I have a Roland RE-301 Space Echo that I've been using regularly. However, I've recently rediscovered my love of Echoboy for this exact purpose. I feel like the ability to manipulate the slight irregularity of the tape speed makes it great for getting a hint of warble mixed in there. I can get it to sound damn close to my RE301. Maybe my 301 isn't working 100% up to spec, but I like the fact that I can get a plugin (recallable) to sound close to it.

Not sure if that helps you out. If anybody ever asks me what my favorite delay plug is...echoboy gets the nod without hesitation.

In his book, Emerick says Lennon was uncanny at it...but also that he hated bothering with it, and so he was delighted by ADT. Seems to me he then fell in love with good old-fashioned Elvis-style slap back in his solo years.

I wouldn't use that description. There is definitely a subtle feedback loop, as you can hear third and fourth echoes.

I know, I keep reading/understanding that ... but my ears tell me much different. As does Geoff Emerick's book. They used to manually 'play' the ADT (for example).

Maybe someday someone will get there in the box.

Geoff Emerick also said Lennon was never happy with other studios' attempts to recreate ADT, (the Abbey Road tape machines were unusual in allowing a signal to be sent from both the synch and repro heads simultaneously) so I'm not sure he actually used it in his solo years. More likely it was an engineer using a very close delay and telling him it was the same thing (it's not.)
