Question about using channel strip plugins

I'm relatively new to software.

So say you put an SSL channel plugin on a track. or whatever pre + eq +comp or whatever.

You've already tracked to the level you want (approximately), but a lot of the "color" of the simulated channel comes from the preamp. So how do you crank that pre without clipping? Do you record into the DAW at a very low volume so that you can use the software pre?

Probably a silly question, but I'm a bit confused about it.

I dont understand the question.
But I track most often with my Neve-Clone-Preamp and mix most often with Waves SSL G Channel Strip.... If I want SSL sound during tracking I would have to buy an SSL channel strip.

he is just assuming that the ssl channel strip plug ins has an input gain stage like a real preamp.. which is not true.

so he is asking if i want to push the ssl channel strip plug in.. how can i do that? because i will clip easily.. but the point is that it has not the gain input stage so you can drive it hard.
