Handheld Vocal Mic for Studio Use?

Hi,

I recently just watched the film "Metallica - Some Kind Of Monster" and through the entire recording process, James Hetfield sings into this handheld vocal microphone in the control room instead of going into the booth...

It almost looks like he's holding a backwards gun sort of...

Anyone know what kind of microphone this is?

Or can recommend any good handheld mics for rock vocals?

Thanks!

It should be a Shure SM7 (not to be confused with a 57). He used an SM7 heavily on the Black album if I recall correctly.

Try out a Beyer M500.

Yep....SM7b.
I use it constantly on a wide variety of singers.
Not really "handheld" though....but I suppose any mic could by handheld...

People never use the 421 for this but it works well.

Also, the Beyer TG88 is nice too. Warm, wooly, thick, fat.

My understanding about the KMS105 is its the capsule from the 184s but securely mounted and shock protected, with a windscreen.

The Shure Beta 87A also excels in this application.

its definitely an sm7 in that scene, I think he was just cutting scratch vox with when he was holding it.

A 421 would give you a good approximation

The KMS 105 is better than any Beyer Ive used, and I was loyal to one for 10 years before I switched. The KMS is a real mic. Theres no hiding behind it. You will sound exactly like you really do.. I love it. Beats out the best Sures, too.

Yeah, he was using an SM7, and these were almost definitely the final vox, not rough tracks. They take eq extremely well, also, and sound great on so many different sources that it's hard to not justify getting one.

The black album doesn't have practically no SM-7 , they used Neumann fet 47 and others I can't remember. but not a lot if no sm-7.
