Audioengine A5 speakers to mix on?

I'm looking for a set of small mixing monitors for <$500/pair and was considering the Audioengine A5 speakers. They were designed for playback but are they analytical enough for mixing? Anyone use for this purpose? Stupid idea?

Audioengine - Upgrade your music

They are $350/pair with a 30 day return policy. It's small bedroom studio for production music mostly. Any other suggestions for small mixing monitors <$500?

many thanks

I'm in the same boat. Here in Australia, they're $400 which is half of what I'd have to pay for say a pair of KRK Rokit 5s...which are simply out of my price range.

At the moment, all I have are Logitech Z4s..suffice to say that they won't cut it for recording/mixing.

I think I'll just get them. I'll let you know how hey are

This guy seems to think they should do the job just fine:
Studio Monitors or Audiophile speakers? How about: both, as in AudioEngine A5

The Official Response

Well, I decided to find out more and emailed Audioengine about this this is their response:

Quote:
Guido,Thanks for the email. The A5s were designed with the users listening experience in mind and are not marketed as studio monitors. However, the Audioengine technology has it's roots in the studio monitor world, and the A5s are quite good for this purpose. We have had customers tell us that they use these for near field listening and music editing and enjoy the experience. Let us know if you have any other questions.

Sincerely,

Marshall
To me this means: Not what we designed them for. Some people use them this way, but we wouldn't, but go right ahead anyway.
