I like Drummer Cafe

as far as Zildjians being radically different from one another- that is part of their 'charm' - no two are alike. The only solution is to go to a store that has a big selection and hit them all until one says 'buy me'. Bring along one of your own cymbals to 'match'.

Sometimes you have to go to 2 or 3 stores, but in the end you have YOUR cymbal.

Most definitely, I've had extremely bad luck buying hand hammed cymbals on line. What a nightmare. I'll never do that again.

Not sure if you must have Zildjian, but you may want to look at the Bosphorus line. They are really sweet, a little cheaper, handmade, lots of character to them.

sabian HHX's can be really tasty as well. FWIW i like the idea of the k dark crashes but they always sound like a head cold to me.

the Evans forum used to be the best--quite a diverse readership mostly grown-ups and actual players, till it shut down and then was re-tooled as a rather sterile place. lots of the old regulars show up on "clocktalk:"

it's a bit of an insiders-scene, but the amount of knowledge on there is tremendous. just be prepared to have your ass handed to you for no good reason.

K 17 Dark Medium Thin

I've got a K 17" Medium Thin Dark. I like it alot. Not too dark at all. Full loud attack with a great rate of decay that doesn't go on forever. Don't buy them online though. I'm on my secound one and I matched it perfectly to the first.

Check out the Paiste Dimensions. They're a really great value. I love my signature series hats and Fast Crash, but in some sizes the Dimensions really stood out, even aside from their great bargain. I've got an 18" med thin crash and an 18" thin China that I bought purely for sound - not for price.

Like someone mentioned, check out Bospherous too. I have a 20" ride I alternate with my 21" Zilidjan Sweet Ride. It's a little tighter with less overtone builld-up. And a great bargain too. Mixing and matching is where it's at. Get out and hit them all and you'll find what you like.
