Avalon 737 + Km184 for acoustic?

I currently have a 737 as my only pre. I'm looking to get a mic to record my Taylor acoustic. Do you think the Neumann KM184 would pair well for this application, or if you have any alternatives within the same price range let me know!?

Thanks...

I too have the Avalon as my ONLY pre here for vox and acoustic guitar

I tried that combo here with my Taylor and it just sounded blah to me. No life
The mic is just there and it takes EQ well but as far as making my Taylor sound like gold, NO. I have a 314CE which I think is a brighter acoustic so I thought that mic would tame it some what. I wouldnt buy that mic but thats just me. I think a Shure SM81 would sound better that the KM184. Its overpriced IMO.

I would opt for an AKGC451B myself. Just depends what style of music your doing really.

AKGC451B
AKG 460
AKG 480
Shure SM81
Shure KSM141
Audio Technica 4051

Im sure others will have good suggestions

AGAIN, this is just MY OPINION so take it with a grain of salt.

Shure KSM141 vs Shure SM81 vs Gefell M70 on acoustic guitar

All of those mics, including a KM164 are contenders for a good acoustic sound. 737s also get used a lot for acoustic.

If you like a lot of sparkle...probably the 451. If you want more body the 184.

Might well change fro song to song.

I have a pair of km 184s...when i want super detailed over heads its what i use...and I LOVE them for that. When I wanted a really hi fi shimmery tambo...I love the km184 for it.

I think it is one of the worst acoustic sounds ive ever heard...get a 87 and a 57/160 for acoustic

To my mind the 184 lacks body (or should I say the body it DOES have feels like its one out of a ported speaker, rather than 'real') and has too much weird tangy sparkle. You can work around that to some extent with positioning, and you do get a little 'neumann-ness' thrown in the sound, but not my cup of tea.

Get yourself an RFT DM622 old east german omni dynamic off german ebay for peanuts. MUCH nicer acoustic sound!!! Or see if sahiaman will still build you a little blondie.

I use the 184, often with a 737, on acoustic guitar all the time and am quite happy. I don't understand the bad rap this mic gets. Works nicely on my piano (again, through 737's) and as drum overheads.

Agreed. 184 was actually one of my favorites for a Taylor 814. Placement counts., and so does the player. The 737 also has a killer EQ and I found I pulled back a bit of the high mids if it was too bright. A quality compressor also never hurt anyone in this situation. The 184 is a bit brittle at times (depending on the source) but I love them for overheads, hi-hat and piano.
