I was recently given one of these. I am wondering what you rhodes users do with the signal. ie. D.I. specific amps, effects and cool tones.

depends.... generally rhodes over a guitaramp sounds best, and it blendes best with mixes that way ... I also love the rhodes played into the great river preamp, nice and clean but with a certain hugeness in the sound And rhodes love to be played through wahwah, delay and chorus guitar pedals! |

Try recording direct form the harp through some different preamps you have, the old preamp is not always the best route. You can control the tone a lot more this way. I use suitcase vintage preamp from speakeasy vintage music on my mark II You can also use guitar plugins such as NI guitar rig with it, I sometimes use scarbees vintage FX on my rhodes to get a more glassy sound. Direct off harp into a nice pre. Into a fender twin for grit, or a Boogie for clean Done! |

My Mark II chain of joy is pre-amp -> Maestro (Oberheim) PS-1 phaser -> Fender Princeton (tube version) w/ a bit of trem -> u67 -> EM-blue or API 512c -> tape Sometimes I put a 525b or gates solidstatesman on slam for compression. I've also gone DI with it with good results. The key for a good rhodes sound is to get it setup properly. I do agree that a Rhodes + Fender Twin = wonderful. Since my Princeton is half a twin I guess my chain is only half wonderful but it works for me. I have done sessions with the Dimension D in place of the phaser or no effect at all and that is awesome too. |

I've tried out a few things but haven't had a ton of time. With such low out put I see why a good pre before the amp is necessary.

Rhodes mkII > Presonus TubePre (with custom tube) > Presonus EQ3B > Soundcraft Ghost console > DAW. Effects: phaser+chorus from TC M-One via send/return on the console. When used right, the phaser emphasizes the subtile tube overdrive edge from the preamp, giving a real fat edge to the sound. Use a reverb with a short pre-delay to emphasize the attack of the rhodes sound. By the way, the standard pickups ('yellow' ones) from my rhodes mkII have been replaced by more powerfull ('red') pickups from a mkI, so the sound has already some more balls than a normal mkII would have ![]() I would love to have a Telefunken/Siemens V72 as rhodes preamp; never heard a more open and warm sound from any preamp. |
