Gear That Sounds Exactly The Way It Looks

This thread's just for fun.

I was thinking about UBK Fatso and how its visual aesthetics telegraph the sonic values.

This got me thinking about how often instruments and studio tools often sound exactly the way they look.

The list is long, but here are two:

Coles 4038

and

DW Fearn VT7.

Add yours.

Again, just for fun.

I think Fearn equipment looks great.

I find the API 500 series to be slightly homely but then you know
API stuff is going to sound great.

It probably sounds crazy, but I think you can usually tell what a mic will be good for just by looking at it. (eg a D12 looks like it would be good for kicks and bass, a D19 looks more delicate and refined, a 4038 looks fat and meaty etc)

I only have one processor that sounds how it looks, Pendulum PL-2. Seemingly simple, yet solid, esthetic and powerful. For some reason I think my Moog Little Phatty Stage II also sounds how it looks, simple yet raw and beautiful, and the CP-251 which can add a huge amount of complexity to its sound completes the look.

The MPA Gold for me... (not trying to say it sounds like "gold" LOL)...

Just something about the bright lights on the meters and the slight tube warmth it gives the sound.

It doesn't sound crazy at all. That's the premise of the thread!

I would have to say that the UA stuff really looks the part. Huge knobs, old school switches. Very vintagey.

I think the Shadow Hills Mastering Compressor, Alta Moda Unicomp, and the Chandler Zener all look pretty bad a$$. Unfortunately, I haven't had the chance to use these yet but all are on my list of things to get...not just for the looks.
